Mushrooms, New Cushions . . . . & A Thrifted Shelf

Greetings lovely friends & readers πŸ’›

Welcome to the month of  August !

It's been all Yellow Vibes here this past week as I picked jonquils, daffodils, lemons & limes for my kitchen bench.  I like to squeeze some juice into my water glass each day as I enjoy the taste.

Way back in early 2023 I won an Anthurium Plant in a competition.  It promptly finished flowering & has sulked ever since, sending up not one single bud.  Last week I noticed a flower bud poking out towards the light - this made me so happy to see & I've been enjoying watching it open.  I am hopeful it is happy where I have it situated now & will continue to flower more.

My friend Gail told me about a project she'd seen where they made mushrooms in cleaned out eggshells.  The idea fixated in my head & I bought a bag of fine cement from Mitre 10 during the school holidays with the intention of making some with the Grandsons.  This didn't happen as I wasn't at all sure what I was doing & figured I had better give it a trial run first myself. πŸ˜‰

I saved my eggshells & washed & dried them out.  I trimmed the edges although in hindsight, this isn't necessary.
Still not having a clue what I was doing - I mixed up the cement powder in a container with water, unsure of quantities but making my mixture quite "sloppy".  The first batch is above left, the 2nd batch on the right.
I used twigs from my plum tree for the stalks ... use thicker ones, the first batch were too thin & flimsy.  Once dry (by the fire) they were easily removed from the shells.
Also in the 2nd batch I poured more in so these mushrooms turned out deeper (much better).

Next came the painting.  I just used what I had on hand, Resene Testpot Hot Chilli.  I gave them two coats & then added the dots with some white poster paint I found.  This was easier than I anticipated.  I gave mine 2 coats matt finish spray varnish as I figured this would protect them more & make them wipeable.

I have to say ... I'm delighted with how they turned out.  I tied up 2 "bunches" for gifting & the rest I've put in my indoor plants, where the pop of red is just so cheerful.  πŸ„

I'm thinking of trying some pink ones next - why ever not?  I'm also thinking of trying them in Kinder Surprise Eggs as these might be just that bit larger.

I'd purchased 2 metres of Hessian several months ago in a Spotlight Sale.  I knew I needed to make some new cushion covers for my outdoor cushions & it only took half an hour to sew them up. I also replaced the inners as these were looking flat & out of shape.
Just look at that None-too-impressed-face !!!

No sooner had I put them on my outdoor seating area to photograph, but along came Madam Pip who very generously tried them out for me & declared them to be Okay but nothing to rave about!!!!  πŸ˜‰

Longtime readers of my blog may remember back in * this post * where I purchased this sweet little blue china bowl for $8 & planted a baby houseplant in it.  The plant is a Goldfish Plant which grew & grew & now trails the floor.  The youngest furry member of our household insists on playing with these trails, having a wonderful time pulling them off & generally making a big mess!!!

During my recent trip away, I purchased this little shelf in the Taupo SPCA thrift store.  It was $4 but because it was in a box by the door, it was 50% off!!  The shelf was in bad repair & needed a good sanding.  I ended up giving it 3 coats of chalk paint, vintage white & then quite heavily distressed it.

I am so pleased with how it turned out & the plant pot sits perfectly well on it - the plant is now well over 3 feet off ground level & out of reach of any furry paws 🐾😺

Just perfect & all it cost me was $2.00!!

I love it when fellow bloggers share good books they've been reading & thought I might share these 3 above.  I wish I'd read the Mel Robbins one about 30 years ago, I loved the Salt Path & also Jacinda Arderns autobiography.
I should mention a couple of things ... I know there is controversy now surrounding The Salt Path but I still thoroughly enjoyed her style of writing & the story itself.  Also I read Jacinda's story purely because I am interested in biographies & NOT for any political leanings)

I've sent the pattern I used for the wool blanket seedling pots in my * last post * to a couple of you, & thought I would share it on here as there's been lots of interest.  I made my sides 8 cm but you could easily make them larger.

Lastly, The Mr sent me this photo through of dear Fluffy Cat at the farm.  She is reclining on his bonnet in the sun.  I thought she was looking really well, despite living wild in the haybarns out there.

Thank you as always dear friends, for your welcome visits here today,

Sending much love & friendship to you all,

  2. Your Anthurium looks great - what a gorgeous colour. I did wonder where you were going with that cement but what a great result. And that shelf is just perfect for your lovely blue and white dish. So pretty with the plant trailing. xx

  3. What a great fine that shelf, and your plant looks right at home sitting on there in its pretty bowl.
Your Anthurium looks healthier than mine, the leaves on mine are pale, yours looks so lush!

  4. As no! I had a shelf very similar to yours but I recently donated it because it is as so heavy, I had no way of securing it to the wall! Wish I'd kept it now. Your mushrooms look brilliant! I'll keep my thoughts on The Salt Path to myself!Lovely creative post Julie. We're hanging on to summer here but storm forecast for today though it's sunny right now.xxx

  5. You've had another busy, creative time! The mushrooms look so good nestled in the pots. I think the cushions look lovely too (even if a certain furry someone doesn't agree with me). Little One is so beautiful - how could he possibly be 'playing' with your plant? Just look at that little face and those beautiful innocent blue eyes! The plant looks great on its new shelf and away from danger. Fluffy Cat is another beauty - just relaxing!
    Have a good week
    Best wishes
    Ellie

  7. The mushrooms are delightful - what a clever idea and they look so pretty and natural among the plants.
Your trailing plant is wonderful - no wonder Little One is attracted to it. It looks happy on its brand new shelf.
The Old Lady of the Hay Barns is beautiful - a life well led.

  8. Julie please let the Mr. know how fun it was for me to see Fluffy Cat doing so well at the barn. Great life for her there obviously. And now the other 2. Miss Pip probably thought the new pillows were not the correct size or position for her nap. And Little One, he'll figure how to jump 3 feet up and nab a bit of plant. I enjoyed seeing the mushrooms on instagram and the lemons. When I cooked Saturday breakfast, eggs and pancakes, I looked a my shells and thought of you. But of course the shells went by the wayside permanently. I could make some mushrooms for my patio pots, but if there is a lot of dry mix left, it would just go to waste. We had rain on Thursday, one inch, and then Canada sent us a much needed cold front. I had to actually wear multiple layers to ride my bike 3 mornings now. But the humidity is back even though it is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than any day in July. I like you have the plant on the new shelf in the same beautiful pot. Beautiful color and design on it. Have fun with crafting, and hope it warms a bit for you. Lynn and Precious XX

  11. Gorgeous blooms. I keep checking my pots of bulbs to see if any flowers are forming. Still waiting. :). Lovely that your anthurium has finally given you a flower. Love the mushrooms, they are so cute. Lovely little shelf & perfect for getting your plant up & away from Little One. Fluffy cat is gorgeous.

  12. I love those mushrooms, such a simple way to add charm to an indoor plant. Fluffy cat looks quite content on the vehicle bonnet. A very handsome cat.
I am glad you got your plant out of the way of little paws.

    God bless.

  13. Ive just recently bought Jacinda Ardern's book. I've always admired her. Lemon in water is a refreshing drink, isn't it? Those little mushrooms are fabulous and what a wonderful job you did with the shelf. I wonder....cats leap higher than high; don't they?? =)

  14. I just picked the last of our lemons, we only have a dwarf variety, but they taste wonderful for drinking. Love your little mushrooms Julie, so cute. The shelf looks cute to, your new cushions must be ok if they are ok for the madam of the house hehehe!

  15. I haven't been able to open the pot pattern you sent but thank you so much for the thought. I reallyy enjoyed the Salt Path and Raynor Wynn's other 2 books but was so disappointed by the recent press revelations about her integrity. Nonetheless, the book was wonderful and I want to believe it! Betty

  16. Lovely post Julie, it is always great to see what you are creating at your place. Love the mushrooms, they looks so good in your plants. Good to see the new cushion covering was assessed by Miss Pippi!! Miss outdoor cat looks a bit unimpressed by having her photo taken! Thank you for the book recommendations, I wondered about reading Jacinda's book, will give it a try. Our lemon trees are heavy with fruit this year. Great idea for getting your goldfish plant away from furry feet!

  17. Your mushrooms and cushions are beautiful. Fro what it's worth I too loved The Salt Path and the film of the book. It was a good story despite the controversy.

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I am now nearly finished Raynor Winns 2nd book, all from my local Library. I am enjoying this one equally as much as the first one & have ordered the 3rd one. I totally agree with you as I feel the same ... despite the controversy she is a good writer.

  19. Dear Julie - what a lovely post - and it seems as usual, I am late commenting... blame a recent cold, which thankfully i seem to have recovered from with no extra side effects...
My (late) MIL had one of those goldfish plants - they are fascinating! As for three feet off the floor being safe - it may be in your house, but one young cat here (not mine) would jump that high without a problem! :) I do love how you upcycled the wee shelf for it - that looks amazing now. As for Little One denying that they played with it.... tut tut, the evidence was too obvious
Madam Pip certainly has some strong opinions - I think your new porch cushions are delightful!
Your Purry Furry at the farm is so handsome - good to hear she is thriving.
Thank you for the photo of the seedling bags... that sounds a great size. Blankets are so needed here that they don't last long in the Op shops. I will have to look when I am out of town at some point.
    Blessings
    Maxine

  20. My oldest daughter was here for a couple of weeks, and she got us started drinking lemon water each morning. Wow, to be able to go pick our own lemons from our yard would be so cool!
I recall seeing Anthuriums in bloom in New Zealand when we visited botanical gardens in a few cities. How exciting to have yours bloom again. It is beautiful--looks like something made of wax.
The mushrooms are adorable. What a fun touch to planted pots.
Your cat photos with captions make me laugh. You capture their attitude so well.
I really love those trailing succulents. I had a similar plant years ago, but I could not keep it healthy. It never got as lovely as yours. The shelf you beautifully refinished is perfect to keep it out of paw reach.
That last photo of Fluffy definitely has attitude! Something like, "This farm and truck are mine--and don't you forget it!"

  21. I love your mushrooms. I might have to have a go. Yes, cats do like to get involved. I love the way you tell the story of the gold fish plant. Does she not jump up to catch the fish? My Belle used to terrorize my poor house plants.
