Greetings lovely friends & readers
I hope this finds you all well & ticketyboo ?
The Painters are still not finished though the bulk of it is done - there are still windows & French doors to do ... fiddly stuff. You can see top left, the new colour which is Resene Titania & the old colour which (showing yellow) was Country Way. It appeared quite yellow on some walls & more of a clotted cream on other areas. I am really happy with the new colour. We have most of the plastic removed but still some windows partially covered up.
The reason it's taking so long is because there is only a 4 hour window of drying time at this time of year - 10 til 2. Then it's too damp, especially in this little basin where we live & the fog rolls in early.
The 3 cats are most unhappy with the constant tradesmen here. Little One went missing for a day & half a night last week - can you spot him up high in a tree? Blackie has taken to the bathtub & Miss Pip has told me 3 times she is leaving home, tho' I haven't noticed her packing her things just yet 😉 We have 3 days peace & quiet as it's a long weekend here in New Zealand (Kings Birthday Weekend).
I have spent a lot of time outside & away from the tradesmen. I managed to finish my mulch pile which delighted me immensely. Last week I weeded my hothouse & made my new Lasagne garden for next spring's tomato plants. Here is the no-dig recipe I use which I swear by & have great success with :-
- a layer of newspaper or cardboard
- a layer of leaves
- a layer of compost (I used a tray of worm farm castings)
- a layer of green waste (I used lawn clippings)
- a layer of peastraw (I used leftover strawberry straw)
- another layer of compost
- a thin layer of mulch.
Give it a good soaking every week so it all breaks down.
Late yesterday afternoon while I was burning some garden rubbish the cows all came over to the fence to see what I was doing ... I love how inquisitive they are.

I managed to read this book in under a week which is a miracle for me as I am a slow reader. I could not put it down & thoroughly recommend it. I got my copy from my local Library - it is Sally Wenley's memoir.
My friend Gail asked me if I'd like to go with her over to Matamata one day last week. For Lord of the Rings fans, this was where it was filmed - here is the town Information Centre above - very "hobbity looking". I've not been to Matamata for 2 decades now & we had the loveliest day out having a coffee, a wander around the township & then a nice lunch in a cafe.
Gail's main reason for going was to visit this craft supplies store Rock Me Revamp as she was after decor transfers. I purchased the small transfers above & decided to try some milk paint as I've seen it used on YouTube but never had a go myself.
We had a wander around the Op-shops, of which we found 4. I haven't op-shopped all year since my big January clean-out & I very much enjoyed my thrifting day & found some treasures to bring home.
The two plaster candle holders above left were $4 each & I am thinking of giving them the rust treatment. The rectangular dish with the lacey edge was $4 & I've sat my dishwash liquid on it along with soap & dishcloth. I've put my dishwash liquid in an old glass decanter because - why ever not ??!! 😊 Things can be beautiful as well as functional too dear friends.
My photo is not doing this justice - it is a heavy glass tile, quite large, about A4 size - I thought it would be beautiful in my Easter decorating. This was $6 ... all the above items were from the SPCA op-shop.
The enamel milk pourer was $4 & the decorative bracket above right was $3 ... I will use this to hang up my Fleur Woods inspired piece from * this post *.
This cane tray was $5 from Hospice ... I bought it home, cleaned it & warmed it by the fire before spray painting it with a matt finish off-white paint. I plan to use this in my laundry.
The Hospice shop had a free box out front & I picked up this old blue book. A few days later I painted it .. I wanted a dark charcoal colour but had none so I mixed black with a bit of white to get the right shade. I painted the entire cover, then applied a transfer that I purchased from Paint Me Vintage earlier this year. This is the first time I've tried the gold metallic transfers & I really liked how it turned out.
This made me think of you Lynn & Precious as I know you have long lap times 💙
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend dear friends - I am off to make myself a sticky lemon slice as I've had a sugar craving all week 😐
Thank you as always, for your ever-welcome visits here today,
Sending much love & friendship to you all,
Whaat a great day out Julie and some lovely finds. I especially like what you have done with the book. xx
ReplyDeleteI have been going to Matamata quite a bit lately due to eldest buying a home. I go via Morrinsville for more op shops 🤭
ReplyDeleteYour poor cats, such a difficult time for them, sleeping in the bath and all. Love the cow photo 🥰
It is a lovely little township Sue & we had a great outing there. We were impressed with the Op Shops there too & both got some good treasures 😉xx

Seriously though sounds interesting, interested to see how it
turns out...!
Sorry to hear that the furry three are 'still' upset over the workmen,
though as painters, they should'nt be making to much noise...!
It's possibly that their there in their living space..Bless them..! xxx
I see that Blackie has the best place in the bathtub..! :)x

It's good to hear that the painters have nearly finished - I feel for the cats, not understanding what's going on. Poor Little One - I do hope he copes until they've gone. The new colour looks good. Lots of goodies to be found on your trip away. I recognised the Beatrix Potter illustration on the glass tile. My granny used to read me the stories and gave me many happy memories. The town information centre does look very hobbity - was it like that before filming, or did it get a makeover for the film? I like the last picture - anyone with a lap cat knows how true that is!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend and next week
Best wishes
Ellie
How cute the cherubs are and I am sure they will be lovely when cleaned and painted the way you want. I do like the lighter color of the paint and I see now why only 4 hour work window. I'm not a fan of yellow except in flowers so this will look so clean when finished. And what cat in their right mind wants daily interruptions of their lives! Not one here I can tell you. I enjoy seeing beautiful and different buildings. This one is so handsome and nice it is a tourist office. Will be waiting to see what the small transfers end up on. We are still 7 C in the morns. But we are having a streak of sunshine for 8 days to come! And about 23 C for days. The sun is so welcome and now maybe our mucky yard will dry out. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteI really like the colour on your house - it looks so fresh.
ReplyDeleteThe glass tile also appealed to me, and I love the cherubs.
I had to look up milk paint as I've never heard of it. It will be interesting to see how you find it to work with.
As for cats and laps - well, you simply can't deny them. I hope Little One has recovered from his sojourn in the tree, bless him.
I have not been able to get to my blog reading lately Julie & I see you have been busy as usual. Your house will look wonderful when it is all done & you will be pleased - the cats I am not so sure about. I love the look of that building that is made to look like Hobbiton. I would love to visit there one day in the future - it is a dream of mine. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by Sarah - I am looking forward to the house being completed & am loving the new colour - so fresh looking. And Yes - the cats will be the most pleased when it is done! xx
DeleteHello Julie!!! Oh, the paint is so beautiful. AS A HUGE and I MEAN HUGE Tolkien fan and all things Lord of the Rings and Hobbit I would love to visit that place. Love all your creativity and your cats! That one in the tree! Bless it. Have a super week ahead.
ReplyDeleteThank you dear Chrissie. I didn't know you were a huge fan ... you will have to visit me one day as I only live about 50 minutes away from Hobbiton, where the LOR was all filmed. Think of the fun we could have. xx
DeleteLove all your wonderful shopping bits. You always make such beautiful items from your stash.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun week hugs June.
Hi Julie, I absolutely love this post and all your photos! I also love the Natural Life illustration at the end of your post. I love their quotes, I often use them on my blog. How sweet that the cows came to see what you were doing! I love them, they are so intelligent and curious, and they love music, too. I saw a few videos on YouTube, a couple of which I have shared in the past on my blog, where people play music for them and they come to listen! They are so polite and sweet, they line up side by side to listen.
ReplyDeleteI love and appreciate your creative talent! I also love your blog header photo collage! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you so much Linda - you are so kind. I do think the cows love music, when my husband plays the radio (loudly) in the cowshed, it seems to relax them & they enjoy it. Yes they are inquisitive creatures aren't they - when I am working outside & they are in "the house paddock" they always come over to the fence as if to say "what are you doing". I love them. xx
DeleteAlwAys so busy, Julie. Great to get the painters in. You have a great eye when it comes to
ReplyDeleteOops pressed publish too soon! As I was saying, you have a great eye when it comes to spotting potential upcycling and always with great results! I also had a great result yesterday. Mary's parcel finally arrived! Judging from tracking receipt, it had been sitting at Heathrow since 27th March! Won't make that mistake again! Have a good week Julie.xxx
DeleteHi Julie! My goodness those beautiful cats of yours must have had you stressed! I hope the house gets finished soon and you can ALL relax! How you made over that book is really cool. Quilty Hugs from a very warm wet northland :-(
ReplyDeleteI too hope the painters are gone soon so normal life can resume for you all. Well done on the mulch heap. I like the sound of your sandwich garden. You found wonderful treasures on your Op shop visit Julie. I love the Info centre at Matamata, always stop for a photo. Great book make over, great cow photo too.
ReplyDeleteI see Little One figured he would supervise from above! Those finds are amazing from the OpShops - my siblings and mom love to go antiquing, you'd fit right in with us!
ReplyDeleteThank You J.J. Little One is often up trees, goes up really high - he is still young enough to run up them no trouble at all. A bit hard when you want him to come down though 😉 ... as my tree climbing days are long over! Yes I am sure I'd fit right in with you if you love antiquing too. Have a lovely week J.J. xx
DeleteOhhhh, I love the new colour for your home. Little One picked a wonderful place to watch the action from. You found some great items to craft with. The book turned out especially well I think.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Well, who would have thought of having dishwashing liquid in a glass decanter. I love it julie. Bet the Mr. has something to say about that. I notice Willie is complaining of the heatwave. H e needs to make cold lemonade from his lemons he seems to always have for his lemon tea.I remember being in London last June in the heatwave, it was diabolical, 3specially travelling on the underground, NO air con. Boy did I complain.Hope you are well and the furry ones. House is going to look super.Hugs.
ReplyDeleteIt will be so nice when the house painting is completed! I don't blame the kitties for hiding away. I'd be tempted to join them. ;)
ReplyDeleteCows are curious things, aren't they?
What a wonderful getaway with your friend. When like-minded people can share a passion for something and enjoy it together, win-win!
Now I want my dish soap in a lovely decanter!!
