Greetings lovely friends & readers
(warning - photo heavy post)
Just over a year ago now my very dear friend Leeanne was telling me about a Quilting Retreat she had just attended & how great it was. She had put her name down for it again & wondered if I would like to go along too. As it was so popular it was fully booked but I was able to go on a cancellation list & get in quite quickly. June of 2025 sounded such a long way away.
But finally, last week, it rolled around & I headed off on my journey down the Island - car packed up chocka full of sewing supplies (!!)
I left mid morning so I could allow myself a couple of hours to wander around Lake Taupo township. Although I visit eldest son & family here, I never get into the township & it was wonderful to have time to browse a few op-shops & sit & have a nice coffee & slice from * this * delicious Cafe
The Retreat is held at MiCamp approx half way between Taupo & Turangi, on the edge of Lake Taupo - a very picturesque spot. It's set on large grounds with good facilities & accommodations. Where the arrow is, is the Recreation Room which is where we all sewed - this adjoined the dining room & kitchen, & another lounge. The Retreat was fully catered for & the food was amazing!
Our table in the room, there were more tables in the middle & the far side. There were 38 ladies at the Retreat.
I felt there was good space on the tables to spread out & sew, or for cutting out.
Although I took several projects π my main focus was on completing a quilt top so I could send it home with Leeanne to be professionally quilted. Here I am working on it & - invariably with me - there were mistakes made (!!) & lots of some unpicking π
As well as sewing, Leeanne & I managed some walks & one morning we drove in to Turangi to have a lovely coffee at a sweet little cafe tucked away, visited a gorgeous shop set up in containers, & went into the township for a spot of thrifting together.
Best of all it was great to get to spend some quality time together with my dear friend as it has been many years since we have managed this.
At the Retreat we were fed breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner AND supper!!! Everything was freshly made & just delicious. Here we are sitting out on the deck eating cinnamon scrolls, drinking tea & this was our view.
We all filed out on to the deck on the Saturday night to capture the sunset in all its Glory.
I did manage to complete my quilt top which delighted me. This was a block of the month run by Millymac Supplies which I started in January 2023. The pattern is called Ruths Quilt & it is a design by Leanne Beasley. As I am not a patchworker this was a huge accomplishment for me. I worked on another project also, but I will share that in my next post.
You could use the designs for the stitchery tags that were included in the pattern or make up your own. As my Mum passed away during the making of this quilt (Aug 2023) I included a tag for this month with Mum's details on it. I also cut up one of her vintage linen tablecloths that was ragged on the edges & used this randomly instead of tags. The colours went so well with the fabrics.
At Retreat they had a de-stash table where you could purchase sewing bits for next to nothing, sometimes a gold coin. These were my purchases above & believe me friends - I was very restrained !!
They had "Lucky Draws" throughout the duration & the 2 fabrics top left were what I won. The wee clip pillow was a mystery challenge - I will share more of this next post.
On the last day Leeanne pointed out the Free Box to me & the all the bits top right were out of this π
All too soon it was time to pack up my room & head off home again. I felt so incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to attend this Retreat, spend special time with Leeanne & also meet some other really lovely ladies, all sharing a common interest of creativity.
You can read Leeanne's post about the Retreat * Here *
In total for the 4 days I was away I managed to visit 8 Op-shops & this is my "haul" above. I will share more of these items in future posts but just want to show the wide vase below.
I have Leeanne to thank for pointing this out to me, tucked away down low on a shelf. This vase was very marked & in a sorry state but at 50 cents it was most definitely coming home with me. I just loved the style & shape of it & it reminded me of one Mum had once.
Just to show you what a good soak & scrub can do dear friends - this took quite a bit of elbow grease to get the marks off but look how wonderful it turned out. I soaked it for half a day in a light bleach mixture & then gently scrubbed it with a soap pad. LoVe love my new-to-me old vase. π
Thank you all so very much, if you've stayed to the end,
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead,
With much love & friendship to you all,

What a great find that vase was! And what a wonderful time away you had. Blissful just to sew and shop and not worry about cooking etc. Some lovely purchases both at the shops and from the destash table. And of course your quilt top is just gorgeous, lovely memories of your Mother too. xx
ReplyDeleteWow what a lovely time you must have had , you look so happy ,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful buys ,
Lovely photos , Hugs June.
You had a wonderful time in a beautiful location and found some lovely things, too. It was well worth your while going, and the quilt top is very special.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful retreat you had with your friend, so nice you could spend time together. Your quilt top is very pretty and you've made it special with your mom's tablecloth in it. Happy stitching!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Gretchen. My friend has finished long arm quilting on my Ruths quilt so I look forward to receiving it back in the post, maybe this coming week. Very exciting. xx
DeleteSounds like it was a wonderful retreat with lots happening. That’s great you got the top done ready for quilting. And you were so lucky with all the bargains you got. Hope you put your name down for next year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a marvellous time away you had, Julie! And all those goodies that came home with you…wow. π₯Ή That vase came up so well too - simply gorgeous. ♥️♥️♥️ Congrats on completing your quilt!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful experience Julie, great you could spend time with Leeanne. Well done on finishing the quilt top, it looks fantastic. Your Op Shop haul and goodies from the retreat are great too. The vase is a great find, I notice it has marks inside like all my Mum's vases had where the flower holder (spikey thing) was stuck with plasticine!! You had an amazing view over the lake.
ReplyDeleteJulie, how great that you managed to get into this retreat on the cancelation list! What a long wait for it. I so enjoy seeing quilts, not a thing I would even attempt. But the sewing machines would be over my head. All computerized. Mine is a 1972 Singer that goes forward and reverse if I push the floor pedal, lol. Nice to be catered to for the event and just enjoy the fun of like minded companions and the skill of sewing. Looking forward to seeing how you use all these lovely finds from the OP Shop. Bet you were a bit tired from the fun and excitement and since it is winter, you did not have to come home to weeding and planting. We are trying to have heat and humidity, but rain again this weekend. I figure by August it will quit and dry out until next April when I am anxious to go out, lol. Ride my bike a few times this week early in the morn before the heat moved in. Have a great weekend. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though you had a wonderful time at the retreat. I love the photo with the cakes, and may have looked at rather longer than I should have! The quilt is a lovely tribute to your mum and a super way to honour her memory. The vase looks lovely all cleaned up too.
ReplyDeleteHappy sewing/crafting!
Best wishes
Ellie
Oh my goodness, to pick out a slice of cake or anything from that case in the second picture would make the trip worth it! :) Must be fun to go on a retreat like that. So many who love to sew! Glad you could go. Oh, and that vase! It is so beautiful! You made it look new again!
ReplyDeletethe best post
ReplyDeleteLooks such a fabulous spot and I love your Ruths quilt..... I did one years ago (in Tilda!) I love yours and especially the addition of some vintage tablecloth. I think I need to make another now!!! Have you booked to go next year????
ReplyDeleteHugz
What a wonderful time spent with your friend, Julie. Precious memories made. I did a quilt similar awhile back, but here it was called "Bricks". I hope you plan on going again next year.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
We created so many special memories didn't we! That very Γ©xpensive' vase had your name written in invisible ink I think, just a wash from you & boom....it's beautiful! Love the photos of you at your sewing machine, I forgot I took those....so cute! I'm so pleased you could attend with me, I had such a lovely time that was all the more fantastic because of you. xoxo
ReplyDeleteWhat a special way to spend time with a friend. I love to go on retreat with Chooky and the girls. You will have made many special memories and a special quilt, with treasured pieces of your mums table cloth. Are you going back next time? The vase came up beautifully with some love and attention.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a wonderful time away. Love the goodies you brought home with you. The vase certainly came up a treat. Oh dear you just reminded me that i have Ruth's quilt as a ufo. I'd better dig it out & put it in my "to finish pile" :)
ReplyDeleteOh Julie, it is years since I have been to that camp, but I always come away with wonderful memories, no matter what the event. It sounds as though it has only got better with time.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fabulous, and how wonderful that you could incorporate pieces from your mother's linens.
That vase certainly was a wonderful find, and it has 'come up' beautifully and looks so elegant.
Blessings
Maxine
wow that retreat sounds like so much fun, I always remember going to Taupo with Form 2 camp. Your quilt top looks fabulous Julie, and will be a lovely heirloom for your family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super nice experience, it looks perfection. So good for the soul.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful thing to do with a special friend AND all those goodies, you are going to be busy, looking forward to seeing what you do with everything. You always find such wonderful things on your 'op shopping'. Pam
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Pam. It was truly a wonderful time & we have both booked our spots for next year already! xx
DeleteI live in the US and I love Quilt Retreats! We have two a year in the town I live in and it called Sleep in Your Bed Retreat! These are my favorite as I can sleep in my own bed and if I forget something then I can run home and get it. I love being able to spend the day with other quilters. Quilters are the nicest people and always willing to help. I'm glad you were able to do this and I'm sure you are looking forward to the next one. Thanks for sharing!!
DeleteThank you so much for leaving your sweet kind comment Judy. How wonderful to have the Retreat just down the road from you - Yes if you forgot something... you can just run home!! xx
DeleteWhat a great looking retreat. So nice you could go with Leeanne.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Julie. It was a wonderful few days away with Leeanne & over way too soon. But we have both put our names down for next years one. xx
DeleteYour retreat looks & sounds wonderful Julie. They have these sewing retreats a lot here in my area - a friend goes to them quite regularly. Your thrifted finds are so lovely - I look forward to seeing when you share more of them. Sarah in the US. xx
