Greetings lovely friends & readers
I am supposed to be outside planting the box of daffodil bulbs that I found in the woodshed . . . . . .
. . . . but I am having a few issues with someone sound asleep in the box (!!) She is warming the bulbs up for me before I plant them 😝 And of course, there are no comfy sleeping places in the entire property (!!)
On going through my photos I realised I'd not shared some of my op-shop finds from recent months. I don't frequent the thrift stores as much as I used to, but I have found a few treasures lately.
Prior to Easter I was delighted to find the rabbit ear jar in St Johns op-shop for $8. I filled it with tiny eggs which lasted much longer than I thought they would 😵!!
The wee rabbit egg cup & donkey were found in the SPCA shop & I just adored them. The donkey & cart is quite vintage & was $5, the egg cup $2.50.
On my trip South to Hawera in late March I went op-shopping with my friend Claire. I found these items at the SPCA shop - the urn was $8 & the candle sconces were $5 pair. I set them out on my deck table as I wanted to give them the rust treatment. Yes I know the Urn was lovely as it was, but I wanted a rusty urn & this one was the perfect size & shape.
All the items turned out really well & I gave them a coat of spray matt varnish to stop any rust coming off them. I bought some cheap unscented candles to sit in the sconces.
I've not decided what to sit in the urn as yet but I just love the patina on it & am thrilled with how it turned out.
(I should mention that because the urn was ceramic & shiny I gave it a coat of chalk paint before applying the rust treatment process as it gave the surface something to adhere to)
This little asian looking urn was $2 in the garden department at Hospice, there were several of them & they all looked brand new. Once again I bought it to rust up.
And once again, I'm delighted with how it turned out. I've sat a tiny birds nest in it - (that is a faux egg not a real one)
This mirror was $20 at my local Hospice - it had a few dings & dents in the frame but I was able to touch these up with some Rub-n-buff that I had in Antique gold. It turned out wonderful & I've hung this in my bathroom above the bath.

I decoupaged a heart tag with paper serviettes & tied this round it |
This large glass jar was $5 at Hospice & I have filled it with Epsom salts, again at the end of my bath. When I purchase glass or certain china items from thrift stores, I always put them through my dishwasher & they come out so shiny & sparkly.
A friend popped in the day I was out on my deck doing my rust treatments & asked me "why do you always want to rust these things?" I told her I loved things that looked as though they'd been found in an old French chateau - my budget doesn't allow for me to buy these authentic items so I try to create them myself.
I think this little verse above sums it up perfectly. 💗
Mother's Day last Sunday was a double celebration in our house. My youngest son Kayne was born on Mother's Day & his birthday often falls on the day itself. Last Sunday he turned 40 (!!) so it was a special celebration. I blew up balloons & strung them through the house to make it a bit party-ish. We had a family lunch together with eldest son & family who travelled from Taupo.
I made nibbles & dips to begin, then The Mr bought home freshly made pizzas on his way home for lunch & after that we had birthday cake. I tried to keep it very simple so I wasn't slaving in the kitchen all day long (like I used to be)

The slim candles around the outer edge are sparkler candles - such fun ! |
My son is not a great sweet eater but he does love chocolate mud cake so I found this recipe online which described itself as the best chocolate mud cake EVER!! It was my first experience baking a mud cake, it did turn out well but I kept thinking, as I was eating it, there is something missing??
Well dear friends, it would seem that what was missing was the large crystal bowl of whipped cream I had in the fridge which I forgot to put out (!!) 😳

Youngest son Kayne, myself & Grandson Sid |
We all had a lovely time together & now tomorrow, it is another special birthday & I am off to Kinloch to celebrate Alec's 10th birthday.
Thank you as always dear friends, for your welcome visits here today,
Wishing you all a most wonderful weekend,
With much love & friendship to you all,
Hi Julie, you have made some lovely things for your home. I quite like the rust effect, what really caught my eye is the urn that you had transformed and put the bird nest in, the mirror too! your little vintage ornaments are delightful. Ive never tasted mud cake but it looks good. Happy birthday to both your son and grandson, lovely that family were round the table on Mother's Day. Betty
ReplyDeleteJulie, I love your thrift finds. Lovely post. The candle sconces look lovely. The rust effect really does create an old world charm. Our homes are our own creative stories. Miss Pippi does not miss a beat. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much dear Sandy. I love the rust effect too ... it surely does add an old world charm. Wishing you a lovely week my dear friend xx
DeleteHappy birthday to Big K and Little K, both significant birthdays! I'm with you on the non-slaving away in the kitchen although secretly I enjoyed having everyone over for the special occasions. Changed days now!As ever, your transformations are inspirational. Think I'll try the rust effect soon. My Nana used to have one of those little donkey ornaments and I also have one of those bunny ear jars!I change up the top for an elf hat at Xmas time. Xxx

Especially pizza's...well...coming from Sicily, what else is there
to love....I shall be making a pizza a little later for tea, and perhaps
a little glass of vino or two...HaHa! No perhaps about it....!
And...being a sayings person, love that saying by Erin Flett....How
true is that...I could certainly stick that on 'my' front door....!
And..the mirror looks nice to, l like that, though a bit risky in the
bathroom...especially bending over....! HeHe! :O).
Before l leave...Happy Burfday's all round...Alec is ten, goodness!
And Kayne is forty....Love that cake of his...Wow! Bet he enjoyed
that....Yum! Yum! :).
Mirror! Mirror! On the wall....who is the fairest of them all....Miss Pippi...???

You had a lovely Mother's Day and birthday party for Kayne. How can our children be as old as they are? I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who makes something for a company meal then forgets to put it out! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Gretchen. Yes we did have a wonderful celebration. I agree with you ... I am astounded that I have a 40 year old !!! Wishing you a lovely week ahead Gretchen. xx
DeleteAll your op shop purchases are lovely and you know how to bring out the best in them.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Kayne and Alec.
You always upcycle your finds so beautifully and they are definitely authentic to you. Miss Pippi just wants to be in on the action, doesn't she? The pizzas look delicious, as does the cake. Have a lovely time with the next celebration!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for a happy week.

*meant Little A's birthday*! Teach me to comment so early on Saturday mornings!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great fun post! Birthday and Mother's Day. You showed such yummy food, it's a good thing I read this after I had my dinner or I'd have had to raid the pathetic fridge for something or other. I love the donkey and rabbit egg cup. Those are terrific finds. And here went the brushes again, lol. Your decorating ideas in antique rust turn out so well. But I must address this to Miss Pip: whatever were you thinking lying in a lumpy bulb box! Precious would never do such a thing, as she is spoiled with comfort. Happy birthday to Alec and hope you have a terrific time. Maybe take the whip cream with you to share there. We had 2 sweltering days, but now after a cold front and 1/2 inch of rain, it is super windy and extra cool. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderfully warm and charming post! Your ability to find beauty in thrifted treasures and then give them a lovely aged patina truly honors the art of making the old feel cherished again. There’s something deeply satisfying about preserving the past by creating that “found-in-an-old-French-chateau” look yourself, rather than buying new. It’s a timeless way to bring character and history into your home.
ReplyDeleteYour story about the daffodil bulbs warmed by a sleepy visitor is delightful—nature and nurture blending in the sweetest way. And what a meaningful milestone celebrating your son’s 40th birthday on Mother’s Day. Family moments like these are precious gifts.
May your garden flourish with those daffodils, and your home continue to be filled with thoughtful, beautifully aged pieces and loving celebrations. Thank you for sharing these lovely glimpses into your world.
Thank you so much Melody for leaving me your sweet kind comment. That is so very kind of you. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead xx ❤️
Deleteoh gosh your little donkey cart gave me a memory... but I think mine was a bunny.... haha.... lots of lovely celebrations happening there.. happy 40th to your son and happy 10th to Mr A.... your cake does look very good...
ReplyDeleteHugz
LOL Cats can be so 'helpful'. Those candle sconces look great.
ReplyDeleteLovely post Julie, love the rusting you have done, especially the candle sconces, trust Miss Pippi to be "helping" Wonderful party for your son and I am glad you did not spend all day slaving in the kitchen. We need things around us we love in the home.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful family celebrations. I think that saying you shared is perfect! Your home is your castle, so why not have what you like. I hope the birthday celebrations went well for your grandson.
ReplyDeleteWhat great finds! And I love the creative treatment you've given each one. Looks like a wonderful family celebration, and a good looking son and grandson. What a blessing. The cat? What can I say? Sometimes I wonder why we put up with the little tyrants, but then Dinah decides to "act nice" for a change!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
I love that rust treatment.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim - I really like the effect it gives too & feels genuine to the touch. I have to stop myself from wanting to rust "everything" around here 😉
DeleteYou always find the neatest items when you go thrift shopping. The rust treatment is very interesting. Looks like the party was enjoyed by all.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
wow some great items from the op shop, I still have yet to venture to our ones, that donkey with a cart does look oddly familiar, nice of miss Pippi to warm the bulbs for you hehehe. The 11th is my husbands birthday as well Julie, he would dearly love to be 40 again, Hope Kane had a great day, and wish Alec a belated Happy Birthday to.
ReplyDeleteYou always get such great op shop finds. xx
