Greetings lovely friends & readers
I had been wanting to do a trip south to check where Mum & Dads ashes are buried for quite some time now. I had not been down since we went as a family & laid Mum's ashes to rest. I had a small window of opportunity & I seized it as The Mr is now calving & I need to be here when he is busy & gone long days.
When I returned last year I went online & purchased this new plaque to put beside the one Mum had there that read "Resting with the Angels". It had sat in the wardrobe for over a year waiting for me to take it down.
I drove directly from Home to the Crematorium where the Gardens of Remembrance are. I was pleased to find the area was not overgrown this time & I only had a few branches to clear. I removed all the old flowers & left a new bunch of red silk roses - this was something Mum always purchased to take to Dad whenever we visited. I've placed the plaque in the ground & hopefully it will not get removed.
I spent a day baking before leaving as I was staying with people & I never wish to arrive empty handed. I did a huge lasagne, a coleslaw using homegrown cabbage & a double batch of chocolate fudge cake.
I spent the first 2 nights at my brothers home & on the first day my Uncle travelled over from the Hawkes Bay to visit, along with an Aunt & my cousin Janine. It was wonderful to see them all again having not seen any family since Mum's funeral.

Left to right - Aunty Margy, myself, sister in law Leonie & cousin Janine |
We were so busy chatting & catching up & eating a delicious lunch that I forgot to get any photos while inside the house. Uncle Rol snapped this from his car window - it was a bitterly cold day with a southerly wind blowing.
Here we are tucked around behind the Glasshouse trying to get a quick pic with Uncle Rol in it. He is one of Mum's younger brothers & is now aged 82. Aunty Margy is one of my favorite Aunties, always kind to me & such a gem of a person.
After they left I snapped this from my brothers deck - it was raining by then & icy cold.
My sister in law had said to me "you don't need to bring any winter clothes, it's still very warm down here". Foolishly I believed her 😐 It was FREEZING! Look at that cap of snow on Mount Taranaki.
My brother lit the fire for 2 nights while I was there & it warmed us all. That is Bubby, Mum's old cat on the left. She must be over 10 by now & has the most wonderful life out on the farm.
My brother had recently built this little hut for holding garden tools, potting mix etc. He used salvaged wood pallets that were thrown out at his work. For someone with only one arm, he is very clever & also has good vision of what something will look like. He even made the sign beside it.
I was lucky enough to be able to spend 24 hours with my friend Claire & stayed a night at her home. This was such a treat as I have always visited, but never stayed. Look at that table dear friends - I was having conniptions eating my breakfast on that gorgeous cloth - afraid I was going to slop something.
This was the bedroom I got to sleep in !!! 💗Just look at all that gorgeous-ness. I tried really really hard but I was not quite able to squirrel any of the treasures into my suitcase 😉
I was admiring this chair in the room & the little vignette in the bowl, when Claire picked it up & said "This is for You". Oh be still my beating heart 💓 How special indeed ! How spoiled I was.
Some more treasures in the room - that pink vintage teapot was actually a burner & had a lovely wax melt burning gently in it. Yes dear friends - I slept like a log in amongst all those treasures!
The next morning Claire & I went into town & visited every single Op Shop in the town, bought lots of goodies & then went to the new cultural centre in the middle of the town. Last time I visited this was just a pile of rubble & it was indeed stunning.
Inside the new centre is a lovely cafe called The Gathering & we both enjoyed a delicious lunch there. That is my lovely friend top left, wearing a new-to-her op-shopped scarf !
Claire & Peter have 2 dogs & 2 cats. Though the other cat Asha hardly showed her face, Daisy the one above followed us everywhere & was very much the star of the show! Here she is reclining on the wet freshly washed linens that Claire had just pegged on the rack.
After a wonderful time together I travelled around the Coast to stay a night with my dear friend Carolyn who lives in Okato. We chatted into the night, drank tea & ate delicious food.
We went for a walk down behind Carolyn's property & there is a swing bridge there with a stream running along. I would LoVe to have this at the back of my property.
All too soon it was time for me to get up early & leave for home. I did not manage to catch up with all the people I had hoped but I did a pretty good job of cramming a lot into a short time. And as always it was wonderful to be home again as it really IS my favorite place!
Dear friends we are still having computer issues & it is taking ages to load photos on to my posts. But I will persevere & hopefully I can sort it out. I have lots still to share so I will endeavor to be back again soon with another catch-up post.
What a lovely quick break away. I hope the plaque stays put with your Mum and can be enjoyed by whoever visits. Your brothers tool shed is cool, great idea using pallets. Wow you must have been in true heaven at Claire's, it looks like a twin of your home, all the pretty treasures. I LOVE the teapot oil burner! Claire looks great, I haven't seen her since her little quilt shop days in Hawera (Cinnamon Cottage/lodge??, something to that effect) Carolyn's property does look beautiful, I too would love a place with a stream & native bush. So have you lit your fire??
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful plaque you chose to put at the burial spot for your parents' ashes. And those silk roses will look vibrant and beautiful for a long time.
ReplyDeleteYou are most likely Always a welcome guest when you come with armloads of delicious food (but I'm sure people would love to have you just for you). They look happy to have you there. I am glad you got to be with family.
The rainbows and snowcapped mountain are beautiful shots!
I can't believe how effective your brother is in building with one arm. He builds things that many struggle to build with two.
I am so happy to see what a lovely time you had with Claire. Daisy cracked me up, perched on the drying rack.
Good to catch up with your travels, and I hope your computer issues get worked out. You'd think getting the new computer would have solved things.
What a great trip Julie. Always lovely to catch up with family which is what I shall be doing this weekend! Can't wait as it has been so long. As for all the gorgeousness at Claires - well, what can I say! I would have been to busy poking around to sleep lol. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking us along Julie. Laughing at the cat reclining on the clothes drier!Lovely plaque too.xxx

You had a lovely trip home, but it does look so cold. Your talented friends make such beautiful things - I'd be afraid to touch them for fear of spoiling them.
ReplyDeleteOh this is so wonderful! You had such a good time, regardless of the cold and wind. Lots of family and friends. And that bedroom looked a show place to sleep. I'm glad you were not without benefit of fur on the trip. Just hope none of that foreign fur made it home on your clothes, or else you'll pay. You must have really put the miles on the car but wonderful to do so much at one time. And then home to 3 furry babes and see all the new calves! Nope, not warm yet. No where near warm yet. Oh well, it'll be July soon and I might work up a sweat, lol. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteWow! You managed to do so much in your time away. It looks like you had a lovely time too. That bedroom at your friend's house looked perfect for you. It's always nice to see cats! Did your three forgive you for going away and leaving them?
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week.
Best wishes
Ellie
Looks like you had a great week . I see a double rainbow , when my daughter and unborn baby died , the church was enclosed in a double rainbow , I have only ever seen two , so your photo is the third .
ReplyDeleteVery heart warming to me .
Hugs June.
So happy you had a good time and I just love all the creative things you and your lot do!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kim! xx
DeleteLovely for you catching up with family and friends Julie, what a fabulous little shed your brother made, and such a nice room to sleep in at Claire's.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you got to put up the new plaque, visit family and spend time with friends.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
This is a lovely post, full of everything. Thank you for a good read.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Ilona - that is so kind of you to say that. xx
DeleteDear Julie, that few days away looked a real treat and wonderful memorial plaque for your Mum and Dad. I can imagine the cold down there, have been there when the wind comes off the mountainwith snow on.John used to love this area.I would have been in sanctuary staying in Clare's room, what a treat. I too would have been like Mrs. Bucket's neighbour, too scared to eat off the beautifully set table and probably guarantee I would slop something. I see Willie is still drinking his lovely lemon tea and enjoying good weather.
ReplyDeleteHeHe! I could'nt survive without my lemon tea, especially first thing.....
DeleteGreen tea, honey and lemon...And, it's good for you...!
Last Friday, l found a box of Turmeric 'tea' bags in Lidl supermarket,
thought l'd try them, just hot water, poured over a bag in a mug, spoon
of honey...stand for a few minutes....job done...very tasty and refreshing..!
Hi Willie, I might try the Turmeric tea sometime. I heard turmeric is good for joint pain, I have plenty of that!!!
DeleteHow lovely to see your visits to family and friends, that little bedroom did look totally cosy. I wish I had creative friends who gave me vignettes of goodies! I like the idea of the candle burning teapot as it's a safe way to have something like this in a bedroom -- never seen one in the UK. Betty
ReplyDeletep.s. the plaque for your mum has the most lovely words. Silk roses look so real - I left my wedding bouquet, which contained a large number of silk flowers as well as fresh, on my grandmothers grave and when last visited 2 years ago it had been there about 40 odd years and the blue silk cornflowers were still blue! and nodding bravely in the breeze in a pot - unbelievable!
DeleteIt was so lovely having you come to stay!!! I’m looking forward to seeing all your treasures soon too!!
