This is The Mr's sad attempt, top left, & mine on the right. It was a long dry season & his gourds at the farm got Not a lot of water. Mine did slightly better because I watered them but still not a huge success. The Mr had about 4 more which the cows trampled quite early on.
I think I picked 15 altogether from my crop. I have displayed them on my vintage scales out on the deck area as they are so autumnal looking.
We had quite a bit of rain followed by some very mild & pleasant autumnal days. Some of you ask if my little hothouse is still producing. Last weekend I pulled out the pepper plant in there, but there are still tomatoes coming along. The peppers have been diced & frozen for winter casseroles.
I was gifted a bucket of feijoas so I baked a feijoa and coconut cake, cut myself a slice & sat out on the deck to enjoy it with a frothy coffee. The cows are grazing in the distance of my photo & it was such a gorgeous day to enjoy the fresh air.
Long time readers will remember my post about the speckledy tree from last year. Here is is above when Sarah first gave it to me - just a cutting in a pot. It has grown like crazy & it was time to plant it in my native garden.
I had been wanting to do this for awhile but was waiting for the summer temps to pass & some cooler weather. You can see it (top left) on my deck - how big it had grown. I am hopeful it will do well in the garden. (it is a Japanese Laurel Aucuba japonica for those that like botanical names)
My friend Carolyn gets up a 7am each weekday morning & walks her neighbors dog Dixie. Using a stitchery from my friend Claire, I made her a simple cross-body bag so she could carry her phone & maybe some doggy treats on her walks. She was delighted when she received it in the post last week.
When I hosted the craft ladies last month, I had been saving these recyclable containers that we buy salads in. I let the girls choose one each to "do something creative with". As it's our next meeting on Monday I thought I had better get on with my challenge so I could take it along for
show-n-tell.
I painted mine with 2 coats vintage white chalk paint, then decoupaged this floral serviette on to the side of it.
I weighted the base with some crushed walnut shells, added wadding, then glued in this simple round pincushion that I'd made from Tilda fabric. I decided to do something with the lid so I made a circular pocket from cardboard, wadding & fabric & popped a pair of scissors in. I sewed on a rosette & a scissor charm.
I'm glad I weighted it as it is now a solid piece & not at all flimsy. I look forward to seeing what the other ladies come up with & will share it with you all.
I lit our first fire on Anzac Day, then had a week of warm temps where it was not lit. It's colder now so it goes most days & every night. Pippi was the first to choose her spot beside it - she moves all around the house but prefers the mat to be left vacant in case she should require it (!!) π This year Little One is most fascinated by it & just loves the heat on him. (No Pip will not share the mat & hisses if he walks anywhere nearby - she is an absolute Madam that one)
For those of you that often ask how Little One is doing (& especially for you Ellie) he is living his very bestest life. I snapped these last night on my way to bed - he is on the couch but hanging half off as someone (me) has too many floral cushions in the way. He is such an adorable cat. (sshhh don't tell Pip I said that) π
Thank you as always dear friends, for staying with me through this waffly post.
Wishing you a wonderful rest-of-the-week.
Sending much love & friendship out to you all,
Your gourds look great in your old scales - I love all the different knobbly texture, would be a great subject to draw. Those last few peppers and tomatoes from the greenhouse are always precious and your little tree has done so well. I love what you have done with the salad pot, such a gorgeous little make. Enjoy cosy evenings by the fire. xx

ReplyDeleteThe Autumn colours of the gourds are stunning. Such a welcome display to your home. Love the salad pots. Great idea. Carolyn will love the bag. It’s perfect for her walks.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sandy - yes I agree ... the gourd colours are wonderful & especially for autumn. xx

I do like the prose, Happiness...by L.E. Bowman...I have seen
it before, and relate to it...and yes Julie, very true to..!
Ha! Just remembered Ken Dodd's old song from 1964...called
Happiness...! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IExTo96V6_c
One for the oldies...! :O)
Oh! And if you're determined to try eating gourds, some varieties
may be better than others.... In India, young apple gourds may be
added to curries....
Still the peppers look good...! And, l love peppers...!
And what you've done with the recyclable containers, is nice to
Julie...I like those...Very pinky...! HeHe! :O).
Nice to see Little One and Miss Pippi relaxing...Bless!xx And, l suppose
Blackie is out chasing rabbits....Bless!x
I must get on...Another lemon tea is called for, Earl Grey this time round,
and a couple of Bourbon biscuits, l'll sit out on the patio, and assess
what needs to be done...! Perhaps l'll count the blades of grass..No! No!
The Virginia Creeper first...It's growing like mad...! Bless! :O)

Oh, Little One! So lovely to see him having such a good life with you. (Thank you for the shout out - you know that he is my favourite - but don't tell the others!) The gourds look beautifully autumnal. The little bag for your friend is so lovely - and very practical too. The pin cushion pot is an inspired idea and so beautifully made, as with all your lovely projects. Your speckledy tree looks very happy in its new home.
ReplyDeleteJulie, the gourds are a lovely bright color! And what fun with the small containers to use them for a project. I wish I had a smidgen of your crafty brain cells! I've seen containers like this for sale at a craft goods store and they cost a couple dollars. Good to recycle. You have your fire on, and our furnace is still running! We just finished 5 days and 6 inches of rain. No sun and only 12 C most days and less at night. Today it is finally drying out and may have a glimmer of sun. I have planted my 3 coleus and they are not happy with the temps, but they were too big to keep in and we are not going to have frost this last week! Yay! Now the slugs are eating them, and I am salting the slugs. I feel like I missed Spring entirely. Drove to the library yesterday and see corn up and wheat 2 feet tall! Never saw it start up this year. Your craft friends make such fun items. Hope to see their projects one day soon. Hope the cold stays away longer for you. Lynn and Precious XX PS of course Precious and I enjoy seeing the kitties relaxing.
ReplyDeleteLynn..The new copy of Gardeners World came out on
DeleteApril 25th...Here's a link to the slug problem that might
help...I'm putting it here as some of the other followers
may find it of interest....
Oh! Please don't salt the slugs....Mia Mama used to do
it...I hated it...It is cruel after all...! :(

The poem is lovely and so true.
ReplyDeleteI love the view you have across the fields. We grew a feijoa tree from seed (well, Barry did!) It's several years old now and produced flowers for the first time two years ago. No fruit, though, but I'm just so happy with the pretty flowers.
Loved the poem, loved the creation! Love the cats!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kim. I love the poem too! xx
DeleteAnother beautiful post Julie. I love that poem too! Clever crafted pin cushion pots, I would think them being weighted is a good idea. The bag for Carolyn seems practical for her needs and artistic. Does Blackie enjoy the fire too? Still waiting for it to get cold enough to light ours.....
ReplyDeleteI am catching up on your posts Julie - you have been busy as usual. I love all your crafty makes & I love that L.E. Bowman poem - it is so very true. It is wonderful to see photos of Little One so happy in his home. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you Sarah. Little One is very happy & is "living his best life" ... he is a delightful cat & seems to be grateful for whatever you give him. He is not demanding like a certain ginger girl whose name I shall not mention π xx
DeleteOhhh, love the gourds and the poem as well. What a lovely and very well done pin cushion. Little One seems to be very comfortable, even if hanging off the couch or chair.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Another lovely post ,love the sewing cups .
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day , hugs June.
Once again your creativity shines! And such a thoughtful gift for your friend. :-) Lovely to see how the furries are doing, and especially the update on Little One. We are still waiting for autumn to arrive, but the shorter days and longer nights are lovely. I just want an afternoon without the air conditioner. ;-)
ReplyDeleteLucky friend to receive that cute bag. I love your new pin cushion/scissor keep, what a great idea. That recipe looks interesting, I'm off to have a look.
ReplyDeleteThe gourds are tremendous Julie, you've always had success with your Gourd growing. They are fascinating and quite beautiful aren't they? Love your interpretation of the container, it looks beautiful.Lovely to see the furry ones by the fire.
ReplyDeleteLove your gourds Julie, they have a great name, its a pity Halloween isn't this time of the year for us, what a great idea your container pincushion, the fire looks so warm and cozy, especially for cats. We are still having warmer than normal days, just a tad chilly today though, thankfully the Winter bedding is on.
ReplyDeleteLove a waffly post Julie! You did well with your gourds, they look great on display. Love what you have done with the container too Julie, is a work of art and useful. Your tree has grown really well, hope it flourishes in the garden. Great to see the cats by the fire, I am sure Miss Pippi is the boss of the house, but good to see Little One finding his place.
ReplyDeleteGreat result on the gourds, Julie. Watch out for that Laurel, it's very irritating to the skin.xx
ReplyDeleteHey, Julie! I love that when I read your posts I can hear your voice in my head saying the words. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a great poem! Thanks for sharing the thoughts.
The gourds do look great on the vintage scale. Did you cut the Mr. some slack since The Master Gardener didn't do the watering? ;)
That looks like a very relaxing place to have a slice and a cuppa while you catch your breath.
What a sweet gift for your dog walking friend. Very thoughtful.
I am blown away (once again, and always) by what you created from that recyclable container. I would never have caught that vision. It is beautiful, clever, and useful. Couldn't get any better, unless it could feed you, too.
Oh, my, your furry friends certainly are entertaining!
The gourds look great on your old scales. Lovely bag you have made for your friend. I really must make myself one as my old one is wearing out. I love your challenge piece. xx
ReplyDeleteCan't cats be so bossy - the family has two young Rag Doll cats, and my boy will not have a bar of them if they come near, yet they are so gentle and submissive to him...
ReplyDeleteYour gourds look fascinating - what lovely colours to make an autumnal display.
Love what you made with the salad container - I look forward to seeing what the other ladies made
Blessings
