Greetings lovely friends & readers
Welcome to the month of June - please don't be too chilly ❆

For 3 days I have been craving Sticky Lemon Slice - finally this morning I made one - * here * is the recipe I use 🍋
Because I was too lazy too tired to stand with my hand beater, I dragged out Mums VeRy old Sunbeam Mixmaster from the bottom of the cupboard. It still goes well despite the odd "groan". I also made a banana loaf using up old bananas. This went up-the-road to Sid's house as it's a favorite.
Last week I decided I wanted to change the red brick edging around my Hothouse area. This side wall had some bricks just sitting there - I'd never properly laid them & The Mr had started to use it as a place to stack things (!!!) 😉 When I walk back up from the far end of our section I look directly at this wall & visualized giant sunflowers growing up it. In order to get the curve right, I had to pull up the front & back bricks & re-lay them all 😖
 |
At the stage of wondering Why on earth I ever started this project (!!) |
As with everything I do around here - this was not a simple task. There were some big tree roots in the area that I had to dig & cut through. I did the front & side area, then had a break for a few days & went back & worked on the back area. Finally it was all done & ready for fresh mulch.
You can just see top left, I still had some tomatoes growing in the hothouse. The cherry ones had finished but this variety (super steak) were still producing. I was ready to clear out the bed though & get it ready for next spring.
Before laying the mulch I put down cardboard as this helps keep the weeds/grass down. The pizza boxes from * this post * came in most handy!
Once I'd pulled out the tomato plants the walls needed a good wash down & a hose.
I decided to lay the no-dig bed again, ready for early spring planting & I plan (hope) to plant tomatoes really early this year.
A freshly laid no-dig bed & some more mulch on the walkway. For those of you interested I swear by this no-dig method. Here is the sequence I use to make my lasagne garden.
- cardboard &/or newspaper (thickly)
- raked up leaves
- compost of some type (I used a layer of castings from my worm farm)
- green waste (I used lawn clippings)
- peastraw (I had 1/2 bag left from last time)
- more compost
- mulch.
Last year was the first time I'd tried this method. When I pulled out my tomato plants it had sunk down somewhat, but underneath was rich black soil full of worms - just wonderful! I plan to water this bed weekly (until I plant) so that everything can break down & not dry out.

Here is the freshly laid brick edging - I've just sat some vintage bits there until it's time to plant giant sunflowers (September here)
- Front view -
And that is a good job done because it was rather hard work !!
While I was outside this morning I dug over my raised veggie gardens & planted a punnet each of cabbage, cauliflower & broccoli. I usually plant my winter garden in April but it was dry for so long here that I waited. Currently it is good moon planting time (according to my moon calendar) -for things that produce above ground that is.
Last Friday was Sid's schools Grandparents Day & I got to attend. The children had all made up sweet little dried flower posies to present to the Grandparents - it was adorable. (Sid was standing on a stool - he is not taller than me)
There is some wonderful artwork on the walls in the classroom - the children get to create these images themselves.
There has been a little sewing which I cannot share as yet, until it has been gifted .... but I did sit by the fire last night & make up some packs of Cottage Garden potpourri using some dried rose petals from this summer passed. The house smelt wonderful as the heat from the fire released the fragrance.
Lastly dear friends (but by no means least). . . . I went out to the deck earlier & counted 5 different comfy sleeping places for the furry ones (2 squashy cushions, 1 banana box with blanket, 2 chairs with cushion AND cuddly rugs) . . . . & where may I ask do I find them??? Curled up here on The Mr's stinky farm overalls that he has tossed here for Yours Truly to wash!!! I cannot begin to figure out the mentality of those two & I don't think I shall try 😳😑
Thank you dear friends, for staying with me through this lengthy post,
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead - remember to be kind to yourselves & to each other,
With much love & friendship to you all,
Goodness! What a big task - but your greenhouse does look amazing with it's own proper brick surrounding - and hopefully nowhere for odd things to be stored! Sunflowers will look fantastic growing there next summer. Our sunflowers our growing nicely and I am about to pick my first (cherry) tomato. I don't think we have grandparents days here - well we were in France when our Emily was at that age so would have missed out anyway. Love the picture with half lion face! xx
ReplyDeleteGoodness! Julie...My head went into a spin, reading the
ReplyDeletegardening work your doing....I'm afraid l'm no gardener,
not the manual side of it anyway...much like the car, if
it goes wrong, l have phone my friend Rob to sort it....
Though it's not used that much these days, about once
a week, to go to the supermarket...!
I've got forks, spades, rakes etc in the shed, can't honestly
remember the last time l used any of them....Don't get me
wrong, l love to see a well kept and tidy garden....
But then...l'm of an artist 'bent' and that's where my talents
lie...HeHe! Bless!
At least you started your post in the right way Julie...FOOD..!
And~I~LOVE~FOOD...! :0).
I have a trilogy in my life...Love Cats..Love Food...Love Pink..!
I've survived this long...so can't be that bad..!
And finally...Will we ever discover the way, thinking, and attitude
of cats...you'll 'never' train a cat..never..! They have a mind of their
own, and spin humans around there little paws....As they say....
"Dogs have owners...Cats have staff"...! :O).
PS...AND....I'll 'NEVER' top loving them...! Bless them all...! :O)xxx

Oh my, no wonder you were too tired to stand and stir. All that landscaping around your hot house. and now the Mr. must store his things else where. Hope that went over well. The foods look and sound yummy and the banana bread must help Alec grow taller by the day, lol. We have 5 C this morn! I am so sick of this but by Wed. it is to be 28 C! I hate this kind of heat wave in just a matter of minutes. We have smoke from Canada this weekend as the wind is out of the north still. Made for a beautiful sunrise on the only morn in week that would have been clear. We had inches of rain again last week. The smell in the air is bad too. I feel so sorry for all the Canadians evacuated from their homes. Love the kitties and hope they do not pick up the scent off the milking britches, lol. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteThat was such a lot of hard work, but it does look very good and will reward you, I'm sure. Your baking sounds delicious, as ever.
ReplyDeleteSid's school has some talented and creative children. I like the way grandparents are welcomed and involved and honoured.
Cats!! Unpredictable, always!
That's a great job on the edging and the new tomato beds. Your baking always makes me feel hungry... Sid looks very pleased to be able to welcome you to his school - such a lovely idea. As for cats, well, they always choose where they want to be, don't they, but sometimes their choices can be odd!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week
Best wishes
Ellie
The edging looks great I love sunflowers butthey attract cockatoos so none grown here sadly
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Lianne. I did not know the sunflowers attract the cockatoos - I guess they are after the seeds. I am hoping to grow them for the bees as I read they are a good source of nectar & pollen for them. xx
DeleteOh my goodness, what a trip down memory lane for me. My lovely Mum used to have the very same stand mixer.
ReplyDeleteGood work in the garden and the lemon cake looks so good....

You have been so busy in the garden. The brick edging looks wonderful. I can see you in Sid. I believe it is the eyes. Hmmm, I wonder if I can gather some rose petals from a neighbour to make some sachets.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
You're amazing Julie, whatever you turn your hand too. Some hard graft in that brickwork!xxx
ReplyDeleteEverything looks wonderful Julie - the bricks sure do look great! I love the photo of you &Sid. And those cats - well what can we say ... its a cats life !! Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah. I agree with you regarding the cats (!!) xx
DeleteAs usual julie your blog is full to the brim with goodness. Baking and a spick and span garden what could be better? In Blighty we are just coming into the Summer months and I'm trying hard to care and look after my plants to give them the best chance. So far so good.
ReplyDeleteOh, my! You HAVE been busy. Love your greenhouse re-vamp. It looks beautiful and functional at the same time. And what a sweet time at school with your grandson. Memories like that will last forever for you both. Those old stand mixers are the best. I have a Kitchen Aid I bought well over thirty years ago, and it is still a champ! (I like making big batches of cookies and it stands up to the task.)
ReplyDeleteOoohh Julie, I envy your energy. What a great job you did outside, It will reward you. Loved Willie's referral to cats, they certainly do have staff. As Willie would say, "bless". I always love seeing what you get up to Julie. Take care.Hugs
ReplyDeleteShirley...Don't if you live in New Zealand...
DeleteI sent this link to Julie earlier, it's a new series over here in the U.K.
David Suchet who played Hercule Poirot for 25yrs...is traveling
around the world, following in the travels of Agatha Christie...
This is the link to part three..(3)..It's an amazing part, all to do with
New Zealand...where Christie spent time in 1922...She also traveled
to Canada, Australia and Hawaii...
Perhaps you'd take time, or anyone else for that matter..To give it a
go...You won't be disappointed...Thanks...! :)

Julie, there couldn't be a lazy bone in your body! You did such a great job on the brick edging. It looks so pretty. I love how your greenhouse is set up. The picture of you and Sid is so sweet. He favors you. Those cats! Aren't they funny! I was going to finish cutting out an apron after lunch today but got into the sewing room and Smokey was asleep on the piece of fabric laid out on the bed to be cut. :)
DeleteBeautiful post
ReplyDeletePlease read my post
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful start to June, Julie! You must have so much energy to do all that work in your garden - it looks good now, but I know it will be magnificent in spring with the blooms you plan. I too love lasagne gardening. Sid is growing up...remember when our grands were babes?
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful winter, lovely lady. xxx
What an amazing transformation of your garden Julie - that looks amazing now. How lovely to have had tomatoes so late in the season!
ReplyDeleteI have not really planted a winter garden this year, as I found nothing really grew until spring anyway - it's now waaay too cold to plant - that said, my leeks are starting to look really good.
I love your cat photos - and of course they choose the least logical place to sleep! Who are we to say one place is more comfortable than another.. what audacity to question their preferences :)
I am off to my final Grandparents Day this week - next year the youngest (local) grandchild will be at High School...
Blessings
Maxine
I'm sorry I missed this post Julie...I must have had my head on something else ;) I LOVE the brick edging & the photo with Sid, precious times for you & him. Gosh that potpourri must smell amazing, I hope the person who received didn't need to use it mask a smelly bike :))
ReplyDeleteLove your garden around your hothouse Julie, looks so cute, thanks for the recipe have been giving away our lemons, but will give that a go, great art work indeed, this comment might come up as Anonymous, but it is me Chris, it wont let me use anything else.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness Julie you took on a big job with the brick edging! It looks amazing though, well done! Your cats make me laugh - of all the places they could be resting!! Great photo with Sid, I can imagine the smell while you were making up your potpourri - beautiful.
