Greetings lovely friends & readers
(Apologies in advance - another photo heavy post)
Instead of a vase of flowers, today we have my vintage wringer washing machine overflowing with fluffy ruffles petunias 💗🤍
When the tree men removed the old Silk tree here, they left my washing machine tipped on its side with one leg broken, where it sat for over a year. Recently I propped it up with some bricks under the broken leg, scrubbed it & filled with fresh compost & a punnet of petunias. Much nicer!
It's a dull overcast day here today (which I LoVe) & I'm enjoying the tree lights twinkling away & changing colours.
Longtime readers of my blog may remember that I've tried this year to work my way through the many kitsets that I had on my sewing shelf, some not ever opened. This Corinne Lapierre felt Mouse Family kit was among them. I sewed these up back in early October but I'd decided to dress mine in a festive theme. I used plastic pellets in their bases as they were tricky to get to stand up properly.
When it came time to decorate I thought they may need their own little table so I could display them properly 🐭🐀
They are all dressed in their Sunday Best & I've woven a little story around them . . . .
Here we have Mrs Mouse dressed in her pearls & festive hat - she is carrying a wreath & she wants to decorate it with the berries in her hand. She is tired of Christmas preparations & all the work being left to her . . . she'd quite like to lie down, have a big nap & wake up on the 1st January next year !
Here we have Mr Mouse in all his finery - Mrs Mouse sent him into the woods to get a tree for the children to decorate. She can't believe that he has come back with this stupid skinny branch . . . words fail her! He says it is fine & she just shakes her head & thinks he needs glasses (!!)
And here we have Junior Mr & Junior Miss Mouse - they are all dressed up ready for Christmas festivities & getting into mischief. They are wearing their best outfits & Miss Mouse even has a bow in her tail.
That's as far as I've gotten with my story - I need to think on it some more. Feel free to add to it in the comments dear friends . . . any suggestions gratefully received 😊
This little wooden house was $1.50 in the Salvation Army Op-shop - it was already painted white so I just added a festive transfer to it. I think it looks sweet with my mice family & a couple of bottlebrush trees.
And then I found this little book amongst my Christmas books. I purchased this in the Stratford Hospice Shop for 50 cents when I used to visit Mums. I remember when I came across it & thought I'd found such treasure.
I'll share a couple of pages - it is immaculate despite being old. Each page has a lift out surprise & these were all still tucked in there, none were missing. The lift-out surprises are on the left hand pages & a sweet accompanying picture on the right hand page.
It is truly just the sweetest little book & I love picking it up & thumbing through it.
🎄
At the beginning of this term in what I can only describe as a moment of madness, I asked Sid's teacher if she'd like me to do some Christmas crafts with the class. Of course, she said Yes!
I spent some time putting together some samples including air-dry clay ornaments, a peat-pot & calico tree, & a paper bag snowflake. She let the children choose & they all chose the snowflake.
I used this tutorial * here * ... but changed it as cutting through 9 paper bags was far too thick for the kids so I got them to cut each paper bag individually & we cut ours prior to gluing. We had a day doing this in groups of 6 or 7 at a time. There are 28 children in Sid's class so it took some time & of course, they all worked at different levels.
Sid, who is still in a plaster cast, was my helper. I've blocked the kids faces out & also forgot to snap many pics as it was very full on, including supervising using hot glue guns & Yes - some did burn themselves (!!)
The teacher strung them all up in the classroom when they were finished & they looked wonderful.
This is my sample above left. It was a fun day but when I came home I did feel like I needed a rather long nap!! 😉
I decided I needed to make some Christmas coasters as I wanted to fussy-cut some of the gorgeous Tilda Merry Little Christmas fabric that I'd purchased months ago.
I used this free pattern from mollyandmama. The felt I had was too orange-y so I purchased a piece of pure wool felt which would wash better when The Mr slops his mug of tea on them! My local sewing shop had this colourway called Holly Berry - how perfect ❤️🍒
I'm delighted with how they turned out & think a pair of these would make great gifts, tied up with ribbon.
This wooden tree was a $3 op-shop purchase last year - I painted it yesterday & then applied some leftover transfer remnants, before sanding it all over. I like the vintagey effect of it all.
Thank you so much dear friends, for staying with me through these lengthy catch-up posts,
I hope the lead-up to Christmas is going well for you all,
Sending much love & friendship to you all,
What lovely things. I share my Christmases with a group of Meeces - some small, some chunky, which I buy when I come across them, and they bring such joy and always put a smile on my face. Your Corinne Lapierre mice are lovely and the little book you found. Perhaps the young mice could decide to help mum with Christmas . . .
ReplyDeleteWell done for stepping up to the mark and going down to the school and doing Christmas crafts with the children. I bet they really enjoyed that.
Thank you so much for your lovely & kind comment. The children did really enjoy their craft day & loved the snowflakes they created. x
DeleteYour mouse family is so sweet and ready for the festivities! I always enjoyed the Brambly Hedge books as I loved the detail in the pictures.
ReplyDeleteWell done on the Christmas crafts with the children. I used to work with four and five year olds and after I left, I went back once to do some felt making with them, which they seemed to enjoy and got some interesting results. It was exhausting though!
You are so creative and your work is always so beautifully made. I haven't made a lot for Christmas but did re-glitter some papier mache initials and then seal them so we wouldn't have glitter everywhere! (I am still seeing specks of glitter all over the place though!)
Best wishes
Ellie
I love your decorating. That mouse story is so cute and fun….
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Sid's teacher really appreciated your input. The stars look wonderful and it was nice for the children to work with someone different. Sid will have enjoyed having you in his classroom, too - such pride.
ReplyDeleteI love your coasters - they are gorgeous.
Your little mice are gorgeous and I am loving their story. That book was a gorgeous find too. Brave you working with all those youngsters but their snowflakes look amazing. xx
ReplyDeleteThese are the kind of mice I am on board with! And the little pop up book is so precious. I can imagine how tired you were after your day at school with the kiddos - and I wonder how your fuzzy assistants would have enjoyed helping the kids with crafts! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you JJ. Yes I enjoy these kind of mice too - not so with the real ones (!!) I could not believe that dear little book for just 50 cents! xx

Love the mice! I imagine they were a bit difficult to make up since they are so tiny and then stuffed. Their decorations are perfect fit for Christmas. And the petunias, what can I say. I do know if that were in my yard, I'd have the herd right up on them eating them to the nubbins. You are a brave woman, volunteering to do arts and crafts with school room full of children. But they picked a great craft, the paper star. We survived the first day of new flooring, now 3 more days to go, oh boy. Lynn and Precious
ReplyDeletePretty petunias & the look wonderful in the old machine. The mouse family is so cute. I agree with Lynn, you are a brave woman. :) The snowflakes all look wonderful hanging in the classroom. Love the coasters, tree & wooden house.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute family of mice. I do hope Christmas is okay for them and the "branch" can be decorated to Mrs. Mouse's specifications. Love the book, what a treasure. As an old Educational Assistant kudos on being brave enough to enter a class room and do a craft with the students.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I agree with the other ladies your one brave woman Julie, teaching 28 boys and girls , their snowflakes looked great, well done. Oh your mouse family are so cute, love the pink one the most, and I love your old washing machine filled with flowers, brings back a few memories of my mums one.
ReplyDeleteOh I do love those mice Julie - not the real ones, but those are extra special. I can see all the added details you have given them. So adorable. The snowflakes turned out great. I used to teach primary aged children & it was often exhausting every day, but you did get used to it. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah. Wishing you a wonderful festive season xx
DeleteSo creative and detail oriented.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kim. xx
DeleteSuch lovely Christmassy projects, but I have to admit those mice stole my heart... they are just too cute!
ReplyDeleteHugz
My goodness, Julie, the details on your mouse family are adorable, from Mama's holiday skirt, to Papa's vest with the chain across the tummy. And the story had me chuckling. You made a great setting for them, and the book is the perfect touch.
ReplyDeleteYou are so generous to volunteer your time in the classroom. I did it for my kids, but have never done it for the grands. The snowflakes look amazing! I have never heard of doing them out of paper bags. So clever.
Very sweet Christmas coasters, and the op-shop tree got a new lease on life!
Wishing you, the Mister, and the furries, a wonderful Christmas!
Oh Julie! I simply love little mice and yours are adorable. What a sweet little family. Only you could make and dress them so perfectly. Of course, everything you put together turns out the best! I love how you mention a long nap needed after a fun day with your grandsons. Julie, hope you and all your family have a wonderful Christmas holiday. I loved seeing your pretty tree. And those petunias!!
ReplyDeleteI adore the Christmas Mouse family and there tale. Your tree looks beautiful! Love your Tilda coasters...it's such a lovely range. I have the same author for The Invitation and it has hidden little notes throughout....just darling! Huge applause for your classroom assistance and the decorations look fantastic! Ohhh and your petunias...gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour posts are always such a delight Julie and your talent amazing! Thank you for brightening many a dull morning.
Merry Christmas to you and yours xxx
Lovely post Julie, your mouses (he he mice) are gorgeous. Well done in the classroom, I can understand the need to go home for a nap at the end of all that! Love the new washing machine look. I agree with Michelle, thank you for your wonderful posts, they give us all no end of happiness Julie. Merry Christmas to you and your family. xx
ReplyDeleteDear Julie, merry and blessed post-Christmas!! So I pray a wonderfully peaceful and joy-filled 2026!
ReplyDeleteSid's school certainly made use of your talents, and I imagine they'll be calling on you next festive season too. :-)
Love the coasters, and am inspired to try and work through all my UFOs in 2026 and the few kits I've kept over the years - just praying my hands and arm can mangae them, though there is improvement now so I'm excited.
Biggest hugs,
Jennifer
