Greetings lovely friends & readers
Remember at the beginning of the month where I wrote about my thrifted shelf to raise my Goldfish Plant up off the floor?
Well for the first time ever my plant has decided to flower ... so I can only imagine it's feeling a lot more relaxed now it can't be bothered by furry paws 🐱(not the ginger one either !!)
Yesterday was Daffodil Day here in New Zealand, which is a huge fundraiser for the Cancer Society.
My dear friend Shirley & I decided to drive over to the other side of the city & visit the Daffodil Farm. This was our car after our visit, top left (luckily I bought a bucket of water along) ... & these were my purchases top right. Two huge vases full for only $20.00. I just adore them & they make me feel that spring is not too far away. (I always put them out of reach of my furry family members as I realise they are toxic to them)
Then on Wednesday when I did my big monthly grocery shop I couldn't resist this pot of mini daffy's just at the entrance to the supermarket. I've planted them in a thrifted tureen & they look wonderful on my deck table.
My dear friend Jennifer of elefantz designs has retired from blogging after 17 years. We all miss her immensely, but are pleased she has listened to her heart & is taking a well earned rest & devoting her energy to other areas of her life. She has shared so very much with us out here in blogland over nearly 2 decades - more free patterns, tutorials, & blocks of the month than I could ever count, innumerable scriptures ... whenever I would see her post pop up on my Reading List, I would always feel like putting the kettle on, it was like sharing a cuppa with a dear friend reading Jennifer's posts. She is deeply missed indeed.
At the start of this year Jennifer began a free block of the month called The Sewing Room - you can still access these free patterns * Here *. I decided I'd quite like to stitch along with this so I began my blocks &, as is usual with me, I promptly fell behind. Recently I managed to finish all 6 blocks & decided to assemble my wall quilt. Jennifer was using a gorgeous Tanya Whelan range of fabrics for hers but I decided to use up some of my Tilda scraps as I have so many 😉 I think herein lies my first mistake, as I just grabbed scraps from a variety of ranges & nothing really co-ordinated.

Once I'd finished the applique & stitchery work I added the borders around my blocks. My original plan was to mount the blocks on the damask tablecloth that I was using as a background for my stitchery blocks - one of Mum's old & very thin tablecloths. I pinned my blocks onto the cloth to see how they looked & didn't like it at all. Many messages went back & forth to my dearest friend Leeanne while I picked her quilty brain. Add some colour she suggested. Deciding not to use the damask cloth I chose a good quality low volume cotton for my strips & broke it up with 1 inch squares, then I tried a scrappy border around this. You can see top right I've only done 2 borders while I walked past it for a day or 2 deciding whether I liked it or not (more messages to Leeanne). Yes - I liked it (I think 😵) So I finished the scrappy border all around it.

Luckily, right around this time, I was able to meet up with Leeanne & took along the wall hanging top to discuss further. I asked her whether she thought it would suit being quilted using a sewing themed E2E design & she took it home & sent me some samples. The one I chose is called "Sewing 2" & I absolutely adore it. Leeanne was able to reduce it in size so the pattern didn't disappear completely off the wall-hanging. You can read her post about it
* here * & she has much better photos than mine are. Honestly her magic touch just brings quilts to life so much!
Jennifer has composed her wall quilt using the 6 stitchery blocks along with 30 other fussy cut blocks, so hers measures 32.5 x 54.5. As I have such limited wall space in my sewing room due to one entire wall being shelved, a double wardrobe & a large window, I didn't have this kind of wall space available. I only used the stitchery blocks & borders in my wall quilt. Mine measured 22 x 24 inches.
It's also away from the window somewhat, as things fade a great deal in this room which gets good light & sun.
The wire hanger was already in my stash & fit the wall quilt perfectly. Once I'd sewn the binding on I hand sewed a scrappy hanging sleeve on.
Thank you so very much dearest Jennifer for all that you shared with us over the many years. I am wondering if any of You made "The Sewing Room Wall Quilt" ... please leave me a comment if you did as I imagine Jennifer's designs hanging in all our creative spaces 💗
It's a grey cold Waikato day here today, with brief 5 minute periods of sun followed by rain & a chill wind. Miss Pip has informed me she is not receiving any visitors today & has tucked herself into a little nest on the dining room couch. I wish I could join her 😉
Have a lovely weekend dear friends & thank you, as always, for your welcome visits here today,
Sending much love & friendship to you all,
Well I'm feeling quite exhausted after my brain was well and truly picked over! My goodness there were slim pickings to start with! But really I was happy to help you, after all to have a friend that is getting into making quilts, it's exciting! Your wall hanging looks fabulous hanging AND it's safe from your furry family and their deposits of fur. That haul of daffodils is a ray of sunshine. Hugs from the steadily warming north xx
ReplyDeleteIt's freezing here too, dear Julie; me thinks Old Man Winter's last hurrah before he departs. Your wall hanging of Elefantz stitcheries, Tilda scraps and Leeanne's lovely quilting is gorgeous. Love seeing the variety of daffodils. The daffs are beginning to bloom everywhere....ahh gotta love Spring!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty finish Julie. Jennifer's designs are always lovely - I had her 'My Vintage Kitchen' in my kitchen for years until very recently when I felt it was due a little rest. Your quilt looks lovely on the wall of your sewing room. Isn't it amazing when a plant flowers for the first time. Enjoy your daffodils. xx
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful daffs to bring in the spring , also beautiful stitching .
ReplyDeleteOur Autumn is just starting , have a good week hugs June.
Julie your daffodils are exquisite - I now have my trough starting to really bloom, after having only one bloom for nearly four weeks - as the others came out, it died, but it gave me such cheer. We were given some 'supermarket mini daffs' when DH passed, and there are a few of them across the front of the trough, and they are really blooming well this season.
ReplyDeleteYes, I miss Jennifer's posts also - no, I was not tempted to do the blocks, as I have soooo many embroideries on the go, that I could not justify starting more. I also do not have much in the way of walls space, or fabrics, so multiple reasons not to start another project...
How wonderful to see your goldfish plant blooming :) Miss Pip certain has the right idea - Mr Tinks has rediscovered the sheepskin on the rocking chair of late and is snuggled up there at the moment - he is well camouflaged on it, being such a light coloured caramel cat. The kittens also have discovered it, but they don't come into my rooms unless he is outside, or already ensconced on the chair of the moment...
Blessings
Maxine
Just got in from town....and it's started to rain...! :(
ReplyDeleteA lovely post from Julie, has cheered me up no end..! :)
The wall quilt pieces are lovely, all different, full of colour,
and look lovely up on the wall...
And, keeping the pieces separate would be a good idea,
as you could change them around every so often...!
I do like the 3D look to...!
The furry three won't find them of any use, hanging vertically
on a wall, is not much good to them...HeHe! Bless! xxx
Well...best get on, see what's occurring, something must need
my attention...stopped raining, suns out, and that's how it'll be for
the weekend....!
HaHa! No comments on the daffodils...most people know my opinion
on daffodils...."Hate Them"....ooooooO! Can l say that.....! Bless! :O)
❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️❤️🙏❤️
PS...
Oh! Julie...They showed the the second part of Miriam Margolyes
in New Zealand last night,...South Island...it was brilliant, she
certainly enjoyed her trip...
Both episodes are on that iPlayer link l sent...! Thanks...! :).
I have to say that I am sure your plant is flowering because it is getting more light in its new home on the shelf. It can't be due to not being played with by Little One - nope, not at all! Gorgeous cheerful daffodils. Sometimes projects go like that. don't they? I think the end result looks great though and as you say, goes 'sew' well with the sewing doll! (Sorry, couldn't resist that!) Cats always find the best places to sleep and Miss Pip looks very comfy indeed. She would no doubt have hung a 'Do Not Disturb' sign if she could!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely week
Best wishes
Ellie
Julie, the quilt wall hanging is just lovely. What work on it with the stitching and embroidery and design. So nice you have a friend to quilt it with such a great design. And now your sewing doll will feel like she has accomplished something. I leave the quilting to those of you with patience. And the daffodills! Love them! and the Goldfish about ready to take a swim up the wall untouched by paws. Nice to see Miss Pip well covered on a raw day. I've had 8 C every morn for 7 days now and not a lot of warmth in the afternoons but lots of sun and very dry. The caterpillars and the milkweed are both driving me nuts. I read about using pumpkin, but it has to be in the last stage of their change and let me tell you that with so many now in TWO cages, I can not really know who is just fat or who is fat and ready to crawl off and chrysalis. My sob story, lol. Have a great week ahead. We are to have 3 warm days then back to this super cool. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeletewhenever I read your posts, Julie, I want to live in a house filled with embroidered quilts, tons of plants, painted furniture and those beautiful little dolls you make! well I am nowhere near capable of creating those things (although I surprised myself with my chalk painting effort which I will post about!) You have so much creative energy! . I just planted daffodil bulbs - it's weird! yours are just coming up the other side of the globe! Betty
ReplyDeleteI love all the details in your wall quilt, especially the sewing machine. Your goldfish look happy and the daffodils are such a bright, cheerful addition. Miss Pip looks so comfortable - she's got the right idea for a chilly day.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous wall hanging Julie, great job, oh I wish I could curl up with Miss Pippi to, been bitterly cold here the last few days, its making my bones ache, stay warm.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting that your plant has flowered!!! It's such a surprise when unexpected blooms occur, no matter what plant they are. :-) I got excited this week because one of our pineapple plants has a pineapple growing, and one of our banana trees has a huge bunch of bananas emerging from the bell flower. :-)
ReplyDeleteJulie, I LOVE how you have displayed the quilt - wow. It's gorgeous, and Leanne's magic with the quilting added even more loveliness. I admit to missing blogging, as its a habit not easily broken after almost two decades, but I am learning a lot about myself that I would not have discovered otherwise. God uses everything, and wastes nothing.
Bless you my darling friend-across-the-ditch....love you,
Jennifer
Beautiful wall quilt Julie. I could look at it forever. Colours are amazing. Your plant obviously loves you for rescuing it from marauders!xxx
ReplyDeleteThat Sewing room wall hanging is just beautiful Julie & I don't know why you imply you made mistakes in it because it looks mighty fine to me. I too would like to climb in with that wee cat of yours. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah. Miss Pip is still tucked up in her little nest .. its a grey dreary day here today & I am very tempted to climb in with her too!!! xx
DeleteA lovely quilt finish. All those daffodils and their cousins look beautiful. They are a lot slower in my garden.
ReplyDeleteYour sewing room quilt is just perfect. I love it. Funny about the plant way up on the shelf now being relaxed enough to bloom. It sure is pretty. Aren't the daffodils pretty! It will be a while before we see them again as we are going into fall. :)
ReplyDeleteAll your daffodils look very happy and so does your plant now it is flowering... what fun.... Love your wallhanging... just perfect for the sewing space
ReplyDeleteHugz
Love daffodils, unfortunately the dang marmots dug them up and ate them, will try again. Your work is incredible.
ReplyDeleteOh that is such a shame about your daffodils Kim. I hope you have more success next year. Thank You. xx
DeleteHello Iulie. I love my cats too.
ReplyDeleteI love how your goldfish plant finally rewarded you with blooms and it must be so happy up on its new shelf.
Thank you so much Asep. Yes I am delighted that the plant has flowered & it looks very happy up there - away from little furry paws!!
DeleteHow exciting that your Goldfish plant bloomed! I love blooming houseplants, and have had some that suddenly bloom after 15-20 years of nothing. I get giddy about it. :)
ReplyDeleteI am enthralled by the lovely selection of daffodils! What a treat to behold! Makes me so happy to see them all together.
Your wall hanging is so very sweet. You and Leeanne are a good team. It looks perfect hanging there near your sewing doll. I'm sure they enjoy each other's company.
Miss Pip has me laughing--and jealous. I'd like to join her, too!!
Your flowering plant is very special. Lovely to see all the daffodils, maybe spring really is coming!! Your quilt looks amazing Julie and Leeanne has waved her magic wand over it for you, so special. Well done Miss Pippi, she found the best place for a cold day.
ReplyDeleteA flower on your plant, how wonderful. Love the daffodils, and they were quite the bargain. The quilt is amazing.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
