Greetings lovely friends & readers
I picked the arrangement of flowers above for my daughter-in-law Sarah, who had a birthday recently. A mixture of dahlias, alstroemeria & perennial phlox, all from my garden. I wish I knew how to arrange flowers properly ... I am more of "a plonker" when it comes to flowers in vases.
Sid was here last week & we made two banana breads, one for him to take home.
He is such a delight when baking. I am always in a hurry & toss everything in - he reminds me to find Joy in the process ... "look Granny, 3 of the egg yolks are still whole but one is broken & it's running into the others" ... how precious this is.
After he went home I made Caramel Anzac Slice as I was heading to Kinloch, Lake Taupo & this is my daughter in laws favorite slice.
In the days after Christmas I sewed Sarah a Rope Bowl as I wanted to fill it with lovely body products to gift for her recent birthday. Sarah is a minimalist girl so I struggle at times with what to give her. I used a soft palette of grey fabrics as she has these tones in her decor.
I placed body products, Gourmet choccies & packets of seeds in the basket & cellophaned it all up ready to take down with me.
The next day I drove down to Kinloch, Lake Taupo, to visit eldest Grandson Alec & his family.
We had a picnic lunch on the Lake edge - it was very busy as it is holiday season & the weather was nice. The Lake is always so crystal clear - Sarah swam but Alec & I both just paddled.
Sarah told me about a walk to a waterwheel not far from their home so we headed off there in the afternoon.
It was such a pretty spot with a stream running right through it, crystal clear - & often the trout swim down the stream but you are not allowed to fish in here.
(This is part of the Whangamata Stream Trail, Kinloch for anyone wanting to google it)
A short walk from the water wheel is a fairy grove. I just found it so delightful & could've stayed there for several hours. It is a large clearing beside the stream, where people have been allowed to put fairy houses in the trees or on the ground & create a little village.
Sarah told me that nothing gets removed but there are rules about what you are allowed to put there, no plastic etc. Also children have painted rocks & stones & used these to border the area - it was just so sweet & made my heart feel full.
And you know what I want to do now don't you dear friends . . . . make my own fairy house & put it there 😃!!
There were a few of these hut-like structures built from the fallen tree branches.
Alec & Granny & Alec & his Mum Sarah. The wee dog belongs to the neighbors.
At Christmas I was gifted a very nice bundle of new tea-towels which excited me immensely because mine were ready for the rag bag.
I decided I now needed some new dishcloths as these too, were ragbag material.
I've used up all my ends of bamboo/cotton yarn & knitted 6 new ones ... they are an eclectic mix of colours but will be wonderful to replace the tatty old ones. I can now knit * this pattern * off by heart so it's great to sit & do at nights.
After I pack the Christmas decor away the house always feels large & airy & I like to give everything a good clean, move furniture & vacuum. Often I wish I had new-to-me decor to do some different displays with, but this is not the case - we use what we already have. I saw this on Instagram & it reminded me, we surely do need to love & care for the home we already have.
Longtime readers of my blog will know I have a vintage Singer Sewing table in the corner of my dining area & like to change out the displays on this for the different seasons.
I've done a wonderful new display here for the summer season . . . would you like to see it friends ??? 😖😠😬
. . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . .
😖😖😖 I think it may be called Fat Black Cat in Slumberland . . .
Thank you as always dear friends, for your welcome visits here today,
Wishing you a wonderful rest-of-the-week,
Sending much love & friendship to you all,

Julie, what a wonderful trip to Taupo. The fairy grove is beautiful. A little spot of gifted loveliness. A rope bowl full of beautiful gifts.
ReplyDeleteThank you dear Sandy. You would've loved the fairy grove - my photos don't really do it justice, it was such a special place. xx
DeleteOh Julie your Grandson is so sweet .
ReplyDeleteLove those dish cloths I use them all the time .
Another lovely post of goodies ,
Have a great week Hugs June,
Hmm, I have never really 'explored' Kinloch - that water wheel and fairy garden look to be such a delightful spot.
ReplyDeleteLove your summer display - I often have all three cats in my area through the day - the ragdolls seem to prefer the peace, but they also like company, so I am a comfortable compromise for them .
Love your rope bowl of goodies - what a gorgeous gift idea
Blessings
Maxine
What a lovely day out and a magical place to visit. Lovely gift for your DIL too. I much prefer 'plonked' flowers to arty displays - so much more natural. Enjoy your new display lol. xx
ReplyDeleteJust checked out where Taupo is and you're North Island. Envious of your sunshine, having woken up to such a hard frost today that it froze the cat flap shut! I love that Fairy Garden - I can see there is a "watch this space" coming on in that direction with you :) What a lovely thoughtful gift for your minimalist daughter. Well thought out. Well done to your grandson for enjoying baking with you too. Can't wait until Rosie is old enough for me to do the same.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your lovely comment. Yes we are sort of slightly upper North Island. I have gone online & found that I can buy a fairy house, ready to assemble & decorate & take down to the Fairy Glade - I am most excited about doing this so Yes - watch this space. xx
DeleteWhat a lovely post filled with joyful things. The baking, spending time with family, flowers, gifts and being thankful. I am certain a large black cat is very thankful to be part of your family! I look forward to seeing the fairy house you make - it will be lovely, I am sure.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week
Best wishes
Ellie
I wonder, do Sid and Alec miss seeing each other? The water looked lovely and so clear. I'll close my eyes and pretend it's here and warm enough out to go barefoot. Your bouquet looked just perfect to me. How great you have so many different types to include. How'd the barn kitten fare? Hope it is well and keeping Fluffy company. Someone must take over barn duties one day. If I had not just finished breakfast, your breads would have made my stomach growl with anticipation. We are doing good here. Precious has 2 "burn" wounds that keep scabbing and peeling. From radiation injection much like humans with radiation treatment burns. But in a few days she will be radiation free, not that it interfered with our regular routine, lol. She puts herself in quarantine most days with sleeping out of sight. We had a weather break for the past 4 or 5 days. But it is going down hill starting today. Above freezing this morn and to be well below and snow by afternoon. It's happening fast. Then bitter cold for the next 2 weeks it seems. Can't wait to see if you build a fairy house. Lynn an Precious XX
ReplyDeleteIts lovely seeing you with your family Julie, they are lucky grandchildren! The bowl you sewed for your daughter in law is so very pretty, and practical! I like the idea of a fairy garden, there is a walk to the next town near us (a cycle path) which has fairy doors on some of the trees, I think someone must have wanted to make it special for children :) It's very cold and icy here, we only had a little snow, but being indoors and appreciating my cosy home is all I want to do right now and your quote to love the home you have is so true, sometimes we just need to be glad for what we have! Betty
ReplyDeleteI admire the time you put into seeing your grandkids. It really does take a village! I love the little fairy house and I can see why you wanted to spend hours at the waterwheel! As for the sewing machine, well I think that was made for that cat, I cannot see any issues LOL!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much JJ. I have been online & found a kitset fairy house for sale, that I can build & then paint & decorate & then take down to the Fairy Glade. I am so excited about this. xx
DeleteWhat a fun time with your grandson. I think I will do a fairy village with Kelsa this spring. She would love that!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Kim - I think Kelsa would be right into a fairy village - the mind boggles (!!) xx
DeleteI'm a plonker of flowers too Julie! What a special time baking with your grandson, he will remember these simple yet special times together. The world is full of ways to entertain kids & over stimulate them & usually always cost a lot of money, when its the simple things that they remember the most. Next visit to Taupo I will have to ride up that track to visit the fairy Grove! I'm surprised you like a black n white table runner & a furry one! 🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteHaha, love the new display!! And I definitely favour the style of plonking flowers than a formal arrangement. Lovely trip and time with family...
ReplyDeleteHugz
What a wonderful visit. I plunk flowers as well, when I actually find them in my garden. A lovely time spent with the grandchildren both baking and visiting the shore. That rope basket is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Lovely to read that boys like Sid are learning to cook....
ReplyDeleteMia Mama sat me up in my high chair, with a knife in
one hand, carrot/onion in the other...HaHa! Get on with
it.....Hang on...1~2~3~4~~8~9~10...Yes! Still got all

Sicilian boys are raised much the same as the girls...!
Looks as though you had a nice time in Lake Taupo, with
family Julie...I like the sea to....just to paddle in it really....
I have a fear of water, even when l shave of a morning, l
feel a bit strange..! :O).
Well...I must get on into town, don't usually go out on a
Wednesday, but, a visit to the Post Office is a must...!
Dry and warmer to~day, so best get on....
Oh! Julie..You know my opinion of flowers and vases...

You're so kind to everyone Julie, as i recently witnessed during our Christmas transaction! I hope people return the kindnesses to you.xxx
ReplyDeleteLovely to see the Fairy Grove. We visited one in Okiwi bay I've yet to share photos. That fabric bowl looks great.
ReplyDeleteThat rope bowl you made is just stunning Julie - what a truly beautiful gift for your daughter in law. Alec is growing up so fast & is such a nice looking boy. You seem to have a special relationship. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah. Yes Alec will be 11 this year & is growing up so very fast. Wishing you a lovely week Sarah - I hope the snow has gone now. xx
DeleteWhat a lovely post to scroll thru on an extremely cold morning (wind chill is about 2 degrees F) despite bright sunshine.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the visit to the fairy garden.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me your sweet kind comment. I hope you get some warmer temps soon. xx
DeleteHow lovely spending time with Alec and the family. It looks like a nice place to visit. xx
