Greetings lovely friends & readers
One of the things I wrote down on my List-of-Hopes-&-Wishes as the New Year rolled around was to teach myself to Cross Stitch again (I don't make Resolutions, preferring instead to have this List).
It is over 2 decades since I last attempted cross stitch & when I look at some of the beautiful work my crafty friends do, I always wish I could manage to cross stitch but my eyesight always failed me. It was my dear friend Shirley who suggested I try on Aida Cloth as the Aida is much easier to see the tiny squares, compared to the Linen.
I found a remnant of Aida in my stash & decided to have a try using this free pattern from Whilst Iris Naps. My dear friend Jane kindly cross stitched this design for me back in 2022. I found the little rabbits not too tricky so I had a go at the carrot which ended up a teeny bit wonky but I was able to fix it up. I made these little items up into a sweet Easter display in a thrifted glass dish.
Inspired by this I tried another free pattern, this one from The Primitive Hare.. This took me longer but I was thrilled with how it turned out ... until ... I decided to teadye the aida once I'd finished it & the red dye in the Cottage Garden Thread I'd used, ran. I was so disappointed, rinsing out what I could, but deciding to sew it up into a small cushnion anyway. Note to self Julie - tea dye the aida before stitching in future !!
I saw this sweet rabbit pattern on Instagram, a freebie from @arcadia.stitchery so I printed it off & have not long finished stitching it up. I am backing these pillows with leftover chenille fabric from my stash & filling them with crushed walnut shell as it helps them to sit nicely. I am hopeful I can continue with these simple little cross stitch designs as I do enjoy making them.
Last Sunday was Alec's birthday & he was turning 11!! A Very Important Age Granny he informed me !! I baked a batch of cupcakes & Rice-bubble crunch to take down to Kinloch.
I also had some more charity sewing to take down. 6 cats & 6 rabbits from my wool blanket stash. Yes that IS a ginger cats tail you see tucked in there 😯
Alec's parents had gifted him an electric scooter for his birthday. He gave Granny a demo. I think this was a wonderful gift as it got him up & outside, & away from his devices. He has apparently been on it all week after school - out until dark. I gave him money towards a new, safer helmet which he has purchased this week.
(which was delicious).
I was most taken with the black swans that were serenely swimming around - I took a short video of them but can't get it to upload unfortunately. They were just adorable. ❤
In the midst of last week I was rearranging some furniture & needed to move my wall unit some 7 inches to the right in order to fit another chair into the gap.
I'm not sure how, but I ended up taking all the china out of my wall unit, washing it, & then (in a moment of madness) decided to wash all the teddies that sat in it also.
Thankfully it was a nice autumn day & I got them all dry on the clothes line.
I washed the lace runners & doilies & everything just sparkled once I'd put it back together (which ended up taking 3 days in total). When I deep clean the lounge, somehow this unit always just gets a lick & a promise, so it was wonderful to know it had been thoroughly cleaned,
There are a few changes happening here at Threadbear HQ as we are in the midst of getting our house exterior painted. This is what the the windows look like currently - like being in a cave. While I am so thankful to have (4) tradesmen here doing work that would otherwise be mine to do - it is also very stressful & the furry family members are most unimpressed & traumatised.
There appears to be changes in blogland too, as I had so many issues getting my last two posts to publish. My Fleur Woods inspired post took 5 days & has had very little traffic. I was going to delete my testing post but as some folk have kindly left me comments, I shall leave it up. It is bewildering to me so, as I hit Publish on this post, I shall hold my breath & say a Prayer. As always dear friends - thank you for your ever-welcome visits & for the sweet, kind comments you leave me here.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend - remember to be kind to yourselves & to each other,
Sending much love & friendship to you all,
Cute cross stitch designs. I love the bunnies. I had to laugh at the poor bears all hanging on the line.
ReplyDeleteLooks like your holding breath and a prayer worked, I see your post! I haven't done a blog post for ages, I've probably been struck of "The List"....:) I haven't done cross stitch for YEARS either! Yours looks so sweet, mind you everything you make does. Our grandkids are growing up so fast! They end up taller than us too quickly. I hope no teddies were harmed in your Autumn/spring cleaning??
ReplyDeleteGreat cross stitch designs Julie, you are going really well with that. I have had the ink running with that same thread in the past. Hope the painting is finished soon and all can return to normal. Nice to see another birthday happening. Your wall unit looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteHaHa! Lovely, lovely post Julie...Goes without saying,
ReplyDeletealways a bit difficult to know where to start...A lemon
tea perhaps....! :).
A very Happy Burfday to Sid...Love the electric scooter his
parents bought him...though l would have preferred to see
a photo of his Granny on it...! :).
Love the two little cushions, especially the one the right,
with the tree displayed, nice that..!
And all the teddy bears on the washing line made me
laugh...it looks like a scene out of a horror film..! :O).
HeHe! 'NOT' exactly a 'Teddy Bears Picnic'...! :).
Love the dresser to Julie...All prim and proper, l love
dressers, l have a very large Welsh dresser in the dinning
room, full of all sorts, and yes, when it needs a clean,
you have to set aside a day or two...and it's something
my daughter likes, and wants on my demise....though l
have suggested being buried in it, she won't have none
of that..! :O).
Must be off....It's a lovely warm sunny day, and l'm off to
Poole. on the bus, Poole is a much larger town, with
large stores and cafes etc....and l need to go to the bank,
and check my 'millions'... All the banks in my town, are
all gone now...so l keep most of my money under the
floorboards...HeHe! And if you believe that...!

So lovely to see you post here this evening Julie - I have been very remiss in visiting blogs of late... loving your cross stitch projects - very whimsical :)
ReplyDeleteI not only pays to dye your aida before you stitch, but also to soak red thread in cold water with a wee bit of vinegar in the water to set the die - just slip the paper ends off the hank and gently dunk it, soak, rinse, roll dry in a towel, then air dry and wrap the thread onto a spool of some sort and stitch to your hearts content, knowing the surplus colour has been rinsed out, and the rest 'set' with the vinegar.
How wonderful to have the house being painted for you - pity the furries don't appreciate it as much as you do!! My boy would hate anything like that, but the ragdolls would probably wander up the ladders to see what was happening!!
That looks as though the 11 year olds birthday was celebrated in style - and what a great way to get him off the devices with the scooter :) Good on you for contributing towards a better helmet - heads are precious!
i am sure your cabinet and all the teddies, doilies and china are lovely and satisfyingly clean and shiny!
Blessings
Maxine
As a person who regularly has bicycle wrecks, I am glad you did NOT use the scooter! But Alec looked like he has mastered it, as any young person would do. I have always only cross stitched on Aidia cloth of different sizes. My last project was/is 5 beautiful cat faces with fancy ribbons around their necks. Got 2 finished sort of, and 3 started. Quit on it 3 years ago now and do not think it will see the light of day again, lol. I enjoy always seeing how you have decorated. Those teddys all got a good air out it looks. And then how pretty they sit quietly with the tea cups. I had 3 days of extremely unpleasant steamy heat! Then the rains came and we are now cold again. Holiday weekend here but as retired folks, it makes no diff. Just wish they weren't calling for another 2 inches of rain starting today. Hope the calves are all here and I think milking and taking care of 260 cows would be a lot! Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteSome lovely things to celebrate here, Julie. It looks like Alec had a great birthday. Your cats and rabbits are so sweet - they will be snapped up, I'm sure! The teddies on the line made me smile and the wall unit looks lovely. These thinhs always take longer than we think, don't they?
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend.
Best wishes
Ellie
I meant 'things'!!
DeleteSo glad you are continuing with the blog. I enjoy your cheerfulness. You have a beautiful outlook. Congrats on the birthday celebration. Dotti in CT
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for leaving me this sweet, kind comment Dotti. Wishing you a lovely weekend. xx
DeleteI cannot believe Alec is eleven. It seems not so very long ago that he was born. It's nice to see children out and about in the fresh air riding their scooters, bikes, skateboards etc. That's a nice little corner with those two gorgeous chairs and little table. Such a pretty sideboard filled with your pretties. I smiled at the photo of the bears drying in the sunshine...there's a few of them. =) And as for your cross stitch pretties, each one is sweet. I haven't picked up a cross stitch for years.
ReplyDeleteI love how you are getting back into cross stitching and what a great idea to start off with smaller, free projects. Wow, Alec is 11!!! How time flies by.
ReplyDeleteYou are not the only one having problems with Blogger, I have visited many that are having the same type of problems.
God bless.
Love your blog Julie. Xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much dear Sandy. Wishing you a lovely week dear friend xx
DeleteYou have tremendous talent. I love your cross stitch and the bunnies 🐰 💙
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Linda - that is so kind of you. I very much enjoyed the cross stitch projects. xx
DeleteOh I love the line up of bears on your line. Daisymoon would have sat under the line willing one to drop for her to play with 🙂🤭🐕
ReplyDeleteThank you Sue. I can just imagine sweet Daisymoon sitting under the line, willing one of them (or two or three) to drop on the ground!! xx
DeleteIt's one of life's little joys to see soft toys hanging on the line. I've got a couple of Gilbert's hanging out at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI love your cross-stitch and have downloaded the rabbit pattern, I hope - haven't looked at the printer yet.
Happy birthday to Alec. What a lovely present for an 11-year-old.
Thank you so much Ria - that is so kind of you to say. 💙
ReplyDeleteOh, you are so talented!! What a beautiful birthday for your grandson!!! 11 is important! :)
ReplyDeleteBlack swans.... I have never seen any!!! Wow!!!!!
Have a fantastic week ahead!! Hugs!!
Thank you so much Chrissie. The black swans were so serene & beautiful. I wish I could've got my video to upload. Wishing you a fantastic week too dear Chrissie. xx
DeleteOMG I thought the changes were about the blog! Thank goodness it's exterior painting and that doesn't bother me, LOL. Your work is beautiful, my niece embroidered something for my sister for mother's day (assisted by grandma) and it was so sweet. That orange tail just means quality control~
ReplyDeleteThank you J.J. No - no changes on the blog, just wish it would publish each time, but thankfully this post seems to have shown up. Your niece's embroidery sounds so lovely. xx
DeleteThe crosstitches are so lovely Julie, you did a fabulous job of them. Wow , washing teddies, what a mission. Can't believe thar Alec is 11 now, where does the time go.He will have an awesome time with his scooter.Glad to see a ginger cat tail in a photo somewhere, wouldn't be a Julie blog without one or three of them.
ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of you for all the sweet cross-stitch projects you have completed. I have saved 2 or 3 patterns from my cross-stitch days, that I always intended to come back to, but unlike you, I haven't done it.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Alec had a great birthday. I'm sure he appreciated your offerings, and mostly your presence.
The cats and rabbits from the wool blankets are awfully cute. Well done.
And I must say I got a giggle from the teddies hanging by their backsides on the line. ;)
That is exciting to get a new paint job--especially since you don't have to do it yourself!!
Great post Julie , enjoy your week hugs June.
