Greetings lovely friends & readers
Instead of flowers today we have my old trike planted with pansies & violas.
Willie you will love this - pansies are your favorites.
On the mornings that I drive Sid to school I walk around the Domain on my way home. This morning it was foggy & kind of ethereal looking with a light dusting of frost on the ground.

So when I saw Fleur's Taketwoart course "Joyful Embroidery" advertised for January of this year I signed myself up to it. What appealed the most was that I could work through the modules at my own pace & then have lifetime access to all the information/teachings. It took me two months to complete the course - there were 10 modules altogether plus some bonus modules on photography etc
Rather than working on a textile piece as I went I preferred to absorb the entire course first, slowly working through each module.
I must admit it was a further two months before I even attempted a stitched piece & it was timely that our little craft group had been given these sewing panels, each of us to choose one & "do something creative with it"
I chose the panel Happiness is Handmade π
I'd initially thought to make mine into a bag, then decided to slow stitch it. I've forgotten to photograph it prior to commencing stitching the panel, but you can see the panel top left even though I'd begun some embroidery.
Top right is me playing with doilies & embellishments which took me over a week 'til I was happy with my lay out & I changed my mind many times.
Finally - yesterday - I finished my piece, which took me just over a month to complete (which was much quicker than I'd anticipated given the speed that I work at now)
I've photographed it on my deck table as my house is darker inside but I plan to hang it in my sewing room. I'm really happy with how its turned out despite the fact it is slightly wonky & not square - Fleur encourages us to embrace the wonkiness of our work.
And Yes I chose to hang mine from a pair of Mums old knitting needles which I tied together - they were the perfect length for my textile piece.
Some close-ups ... a piece of Sanderson fabric top left - I've fabric painted some of the flowers but left the leaves natural. Vintage Suffolk puff & hexagon top right, the lace piece is from Mums old sewing box. I've added a few clusters of bead embellishing here.
One of Mum's old jug covers - I added a motif to the centre & more tiny beads. Practicing a square of thread weaving top right.
Some couching & french knots on the left & some kantha stitching on the right. Many of the doilies were from Mums stash, some were torn but I've just used pieces of the torn ones.
A line of vintage crochet lace & some buttons & then top right I used a section of this orange doiley as the sewing machine panel had orange in it so I mainly focused on oranges, pinks & blues in my piece. π§‘ππ
Rather than leave raw edges I backed my piece with a cotton fabric & bound the edges. I wrote a label for it & handsewed this on.
Here is my centre panel - I just loved how the handwork gave it so much texture & made it sort-of pop out at you.
And Yes dear friends - Happiness is indeed Handmade !! I just love the whole process of creativity & am so thankful for this gift in my life.
And look dear friends ... I didn't even have to iron it because Pippi & Little One very kindly flattened it for me π
A couple of the ladies had finished theirs last month - Gail used her panel to cover a book box & then made the inside into a miniature sewing room complete with a cat & cake !!!
And Sharlaine made her panel into a stunning Journal cover on a piece of vintage wool. I just love what both ladies have done with theirs & will share the others when (if) the ladies have completed them.
Thank you so much for your ever-welcome visits here today,
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend - remember to be kind to yourselves & to each other,
Sending much love & friendship to you all,
Absolutely Beautiful Julie xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sandy ♥️ It was an enjoyable project to work on. xx

ReplyDeleteWhat a magnificent finish Julie, a really sweet keepsake in memory of your Mum. The knitting needles are perfect too. You just need the third cat to give it the "Paw" of approval.... :)) Your crafty ladies made some cute things from the panel too, the little dolls house is special, I wonder if she'd let me rent the place?? No frosts here.....but f-i-n-a-l-l-y the first fire was lit yesterday! Yay winter my friend!

The phrase "happiness is homemade" means that
Deletetrue joy isn't mass-produced or easily bought; it is
cultivated through personal effort, love, and intention.
Just like a home-cooked meal or a handcrafted gift,
your well-being requires "labor of love" and a conscious
choice to shape your daily life....!x

What beautiful handwork, Julie. It must give you joy every time you look at it, particularly with keepsakes in it from your Mum.
ReplyDeleteYour pansies are so pretty. I love their little faces.
Oh, your mother would have loved to have seen this finished! It is stunning. I like all the little detail and embroidery. And Gail's miniature shadow box makes me wish to be a kid with a doll house. Lovely work by all your friends. And of course, none could be possible without the staff to iron all wrinkles out for you. Here we have the Spring pansies, not me as they are deer salad, but in town. And you have Fall pansies. We had 2 C this morn and I think this is the last of it. At least it was not frost as I had finally planted my seedlings and coleus outside on Tuesday. We did have frost on Monday. I like knowing there were "only" 22 more calves to come! Wow the Mr. must have a lot of calves to work with now. No biking for the past 2 miserable cold and wet weeks. Now they say it is to go straight up to 27 C on Monday! Nuts! And Precious and I are about nuts, lol. I so enjoy your posts. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely piece Julie and I love the idea of using the knitting needles to hang it....

I am so glad I popped in. I have missed so many posts. I am not seeing any of your current posts on my reading list as well as several others. So strange.
ReplyDeleteYou are incredibly talented. Absolutely beautiful. I love the quote you shared about "strange things that make our little weird hearts happy." I love that.
Thank you Chrissie & also thanks for letting me know about the reading list issues. This post doesn't seem to have published properly & I am not sure why.
DeleteYour 'Happiness is Homemade' is filled with lovely imagination, creativity and sweet keepsakes from another era, lovely Julie. It's gorgeous ! I love everything Fleur Woods. I must get her book as I imagine it is filled with beauty from cover to cover. This form of creativity and hand stitching is my very favourite form of stitching.
ReplyDeleteHello Julie. I have not heard of Fleur Woods over here but gosh her work looks just stunning - I googled her. Your piece is equally as lovely & I think your Mom would be delighted that you have used some of her linens in it - given them a new life. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah - I agree with you regarding Fleur Woods work, it is amazing & I love all her flowery pieces. Have a lovely week Sarah. xx
DeleteLovely work as usual! The cats agree - but I suppose it's Happiness is Pawmade for them!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much J.J. Yes I guess is it Pawmade for them. They are NOT happy at present - we have tradesmen here. I mean, how dare I ??!!! Have a lovely weekend J.J. xx
DeleteOh what a wonderful project, and I do love how you mounted your panel Julie - that is absolutely gorgeous. Love all the texture and extra stitching you have added.
ReplyDeleteBlessings
Maxine
For some reason, I didn't see this post. What a beautiful project and how kind of your feline 'helpers' to press it for you! It's a really special piece. It looks like you all had so much fun !
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
