Van Life, Charity Sewing & New (Winter) Cushions

Greetings lovely friends & readers

On my bench today the rose "Heaven Scent", one of the roses gifted to me when my Mum passed away.

💜

(I acknowledge this next part may be of no interest to many folk but I wanted to document it as I write this blog as a memory book for myself & my Grandchildren, for the future - so wanted to include it)

In October of 2024 my youngest son Kayne (Sid's Dad) purchased a van privately from Auckland.  The van had belonged to a carpet layer so was a generous size which was good as Kayne planned to fit it out as a Camper for himself & his family.  I took these photos when he first bought it around to show me.

Over the course of the next year Kayne gutted it & set about fitting it out with bunks which folded out into a bottom double bed, a handbasin, toilet & made it able to be certified for Freedom Camping.  You need a certificate for this here in New Zealand.  This was all built by Kayne as time & - mostly funds - allowed.  Nicole did all the painting, sewed the curtains & the soft furnishings for the van.

It was all done on a shoestring or as my dear Dad would say - the sniff of an oily rag.    All the while they planned & saved for a big South Island trip.

Their South Island trip came to fruition recently & they all had a most wonderful time away.  Unfortunately with the cost of petrol currently in NZ, it was not an ideal time so they ended up cutting their trip in half & only doing the top part of the South Island, which in hindsight, was a good decision.

A week before Easter they headed off from Te Awamutu (white asterix), drove down the middle to Wellington (yellow star) where they caught the Interisland ferry across to Picton  (this takes 3.5 hours to cross)

I've tried to show their trip around the top of the South Island here ...
 (1) Picton to (2) Nelson, down to (3) Murchison, (4) Hanmer Springs, (5) Christchurch, out to (6) Akaroa, up to (7) Kaikoura & then up to (8) Blenheim before back up to Picton for the ferry home.
They were away for 3 weeks all up, staying a couple of nights in some places, sometimes freedom camping but also staying in some Camp Grounds to use the facilities.

Here they are at one Camp Ground - they had purchased this tent-style-cover which you attach over the back door of the Van when it is up & it adds another "room" to the van.  It was wonderful.

A few holiday snaps showing the wonderful autumnal weather they experienced.

Such a great experience for all of them.  Sid's favorite place of all (yes I asked) was Hanmer Springs.  He actually had his birthday while away on the trip & turned 9 !!!   I'm sure you will be seeing more Van Adventures on this blog in the future.  😊

Last weekend was Anzac Weekend here in New Zealand.  I'd been having a sort out of my wool blankets & decided to make some hot water bottle covers.  These are going to a charity that my eldest son has put me on, to but I will document more about this once they have been received as I have still to get these down to Taupo.  I made 6 covers & then put new hotties inside them.  Little One gave them the "seal of approval".

While i had the offcuts I decided to make some lavender hearts.  I used to make & sell so many of these in my craft cottage.  They are filled with my homegrown dried lavender.  These are going to the Charity also.

You can see I wasn't quick enough putting the wool blankets away & Someone has taken up residence on the lovely thick orange one ... well I guess it is her colour  🧡

Late last year my sister-in-law gifted me this plum velvet bolster cushion that she no longer had a use for.  I must admit I didn't use it & tucked it away in my trunk.  Recently I noticed Bed, Bath & Beyond had the same plum velvet cushions with 60% off so I treated myself to two.
As we've had a run of fine sunny autumnal days I've been washing all my bedlinen & changing to winter sheets & blankets.  It has been great to get them all dry outside on the clothes-line.

I pulled out my burgundy quilt from the trunk as this is a good weight for winter & it matched the cushions well.  I also pulled out my Zinnia cushion made in this post back in 2021.

Although the cushions seem to be photographing quite dark today they are actually a rich plum colour.    I picked some of my hydrangeas which are similar colours at present, & put a Jugful beside my bed.

It's amazing how just the addition of 2 new cushions can add such a warm cosy vibe to the room.  And look at that dear friends .  .  .  not a cat in sight (Yet) !!

Thank you all so much for staying through this long post.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead - remember to be kind to yourselves & to each other,

Sending much love & friendship to you all,

  2. Oh! Wow! That looks really great Julie....That van looks
good to, both outside and in, very smart, and they certainly
    had a great time...
And yes...we.ve the same problem here in the UK...price of
fuel going up, along with everything else, especially food,
though l'm eating more 'road kill' it's cheaper, and easier to
pick up...off the side of the road...!

And...It's no secret, the only place l would want to visit now
is New Zealand....I love it..from a distance, of course, and
anything to do with New Zealand that appears on TV, l
    will always watch...
And...I'd love to visit the 'furry ones'...HeHe! Bless! Oh! and
l might even say Hello to you Julie...if your around...I think
flying is the best way to visit...though it would make my
arms ache and my feet sore on landing...! :O).
(Goodness me..I do waffle on)...! :).

Busy day, to~day....Richard's coming up at 9.30...he's going
to get my new mobile up and running, thought l'd let him
do it, he's a bit of a wizz kid...he actually built my original
PC back in 2008...and recently upgraded it to Windows 11.

Best get on...Look forward to a few more photos of the
families trip Julie...in further posts..l love holiday snaps,
there always so happy and cheerful...And with lovely
    scenery, even better...Bless! :O)

I'll sign off quietly...Don't want to wake Miss Pippi...! :)x

  4. Such a fabulous idea to turn a van into a beautiful holiday home on wheels. Your son and daughter-in-law worked wonders. Sad, isn't it, this world we find ourselves living in. Your hydrangeas are morphing into glorious autumnal beauty. All the pretties you've transformed with your magic look fabulous, lovely Julie.

  5. Julie, the first thing I'm going to say is I'm not going to let my husband see this post. He is always wanted to buy a worker van and outfit it into a camper van. So far he makes do with our minivan on all of his trips. He's off on one this weekend actually. He does have a cot with a cushy mattress and he carries a porta potty. A camp stove and a cooler and I think he's as set as he needs to be. Precious and I stay home and hold down the fort so to speak. I do look forward to any pictures you post of their trip. I had heard a few weeks ago of the terrible flooding that happened down around Wellington and people getting killed from the floods. I hope your son was well away from this disaster. Here we're having one more morning of Frost and Frozen bird baths. Won't be the last frost but I hope it's the last freeze. One of these days I'll be able to get outside without wearing hat, coat and mittens, lol. Lynn and Precious XX

  6. Years ago, my husband bought an old builder's van and converted it to a sort of motor caravan. It wasn't nearly as smart as your son's, though.

  7. I love reading about van life, and watching videos of those living in their vans. Years ago I bought an old ambulance and got a friend to convert it for camping. I soon found out that the engine was a gas guzzler so couldn't afford to go very far in it. Your sewing skills are very inspiring.

    1. Thank you Ilona. It's funny as I thought of you when I was writing that post as you sometimes mention your car camping on your blog posts & it always fascinates me. That was a shame the ambulance engine was a gas guzzler. Fuel prices are the highest they've ever been here at the moment, likewise in many countries currently. Thanks again Ilona.

  8. The van conversion looks lovely & that trip sounded wonderful. Shame about the prohibitive prices of fuel though, same thing here in Au. :(. My Mum's family comes from around Blenheim. Love the hydrangeas, the colour is glorious.

  9. The van looks very comfy and it sounds as though everyone enjoyed their holiday. It's good to see Little One is checking your work! I'm sure the hot water bottles and hearts will be very popular. The cushions work really well together and it all looks so cosy with the quilt. The hydrangeas are beautiful too.
    Have a lovely week.
    Best wishes

  11. Wow, what a great conversion of the van. Years ago my dad got a frame and built us a trailer. Loved camping with it and I am sure your sons family will have as many happy memories of trips as well.

    God bless.

  12. Oh I would LOVE a camper to go adventuring in, would be fun! Your son and DIL did a lovely job of the van. Fun family times together. Nice charity work Julie great us of the vintage wool blankets. I think back in my 20plus rose bush days in Taranaki I had that 'Heaven Sent" rose....it's beautiful. Your bedroom looks cosy and ready for winter....will someone tell the weather gods I'm ready for it here in the north!

  14. What a super job they have done on the camper van. I was excited to see much of MY route when I was in NZ last year - Christchurch, Akaroa, Ashburton, Tekapo, Mount Cook, Twizel, Cromwell, Wanaka, Haast, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef, Hakitika, Greymouth and then back to Christchurch on the Trans Alpine railway. Happy memories. I can imagine the cost of fuel has made a big dent in everyone's plans. I paid 189.9 per litre here this morning . . .

Love your new cushions (such a rich plum colour) and how they set off the bed, esp. with those dark Hydrangeas.

  15. I follow an English lady on Instagram and she sold everything and bought a camper van. She's just driven from Vancouver to Alaska. Her name's The Retirement Rebel. Always been on my bucket list to travel around in a camper van! It'll never happen now!xxx

  16. How absolutely wonderful is that camper! I can see so much work involved, but worth it indeed. I’m glad you documented it here, Julie, to share with us as well as keeping a record for your family.🥰
Wonderful gifts you’ve made for charity, and I’m sure those hot water bottle covers will be most appreciated in your NZ winter. Over here, where the tropical warmth never ends in any season we never see wool blankets at the op shops. But I am hopeful, and praying, for a cooler winter this year. I’d love to snuggle into some pretty cardigans, and wear socks for at least a month. 😉
    God bless!
    Jennifer

Wonderful amenities in the van – a wonderful trip.

The heating pads are great, just like your lovely pillows... including the lavender hearts. I made some little lavender sleep masks, which were a big hit with the family.

      Sending you happy greetings, Viola

  21. The autumn is a great time to travel in the South island I discovered in 2021 - I did a 3 week bus tour, and we only had one wet morning in all the time! What a great van conversion that was, and with the added 'tent' room, it certainly made for great holiday accommodation.
loving your change of bedroom decor - the is a lovely rich burgundy
    Blessings
