Greetings lovely friends & readers
Apologies in advance - photo heavy post & apologies to Willie, no cat pictures sorry (!!)
It's been all about the Sweet-peas this week as they gradually come to an end ... & the hydrangeas are drying on the bushes as it's so HOT here 💜
January was a super busy month filled with many different things. It's summer school holidays here in New Zealand - the children get over 6 weeks off school so there was lots of time spent with my Grandsons.
I travelled down to Kinloch & spent some time with Alec - he wanted to go to the Lake & snorkel. Lake Taupo was so crystal clear & stunning, very cold though.
We spent the whole morning at the Lake, then had a pizza lunch as we found a wood-fired pizza store right on the Lake front.
I had Sid a lot more while his parents worked - we baked Banana Bread & went to the local movie theater to see Sonic the hedgehog. We also crafted lots, but this Granny forgot to take any photos.
When I packed all my christmas decor away I left out the Flat Angel that I made in * this post *. I was not very happy with her & did not know why ... it felt like she needed something extra ??
After looking at her for a few days I realised she needed something to frame her. I found this old blackboard in my sleep-out & thought this might fit her perfectly size-wise.
I painted it with Linen chalk paint & the frame in Raspberry Beret. Then I added some offcuts of leftover transfers to 2 corners. I attached my Angel to the board & was just delighted with how it turned out - I even think she is smiling brighter now 😊
I managed to complete the Euro Cushion Cover that I began working on in my last post. I had wanted to use up the extra cross-stitch that my friend Jane gifted to me for my birthday last year.
I had no idea what I was doing but had it in my head to make a sort of slow stitched piece incorporating more of the French General fabrics that my friend Shirley had gifted me. This Antoinette range is especially beautiful. I made the x-stitch the focal & then added bits of fabric around it, making it up as I went along.
I embellished with some yo yo hearts, pearl buttons, & also lots of kantha stitches to give the fabric some texture, rather than machine quilting it.
I added in some vintage lace oddments from my stash . . . .
A patchwork section to use up the French General fabrics, some braids & crochet lace & a gorgeous piece of linen handpainted with flowers - I think this was a blouse once-upon-a-time.
I made a simple button closure for the calico back, did not have any buttons big enough but found a button covering kit in my drawer so covered 2 buttons to use instead of going out & buying some.
I also made a Roundie cushion using a pattern from my Granny Chic Book & stuffing from an old pillow.
Here are the 2 new cushions displayed on my bed. I just love how it has turned out & look at that dear friends -
not a cat in sight !!!
My dear friend Jennifer from elefantz designs is encouraging us to pull out books & magazines we already have in our bookshelves, to give us inspiration. I was leafing through my pile of Simply Vintage magazines & came across this Ladybird Pincushion pattern, then remembered I had a wee stash of these vintage jelly molds in my cupboard. I chose the largest sized mold & made up the pincushion in an afternoon using felt scraps from my stash 🖤
Our small craft group is meeting next week to discuss the years program & I thought this might be a simple achievable project for the girls to do some time in the year ahead.
(The pattern is from Simply Vintage Volume 23, Summer 2017)
If you've made it this far then well done & Thank You !!
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend - it's going to be another Hot one here so maybe some time indoors doing more creative projects?
Sending much love & friendship to you all,
What a busy time you have had, lucky grandsons having a creative & loving granny. I love lake Taupo swims...always refreshing and can be done at the speed of light the colder it is! The general store at Kinloch is pretty good too. Has one of the cats taken over the bed to claim the new cushions yet??
ReplyDeleteYou have been super busy Julie and very productive! Wonderful cushions - seems strange for there not to be a cat on the bed already! So good to have time with the boys. Lake Taupo is always cold isn't it!! Love your pincushion and lady bird. I could have happily looked at lots more photos!
ReplyDeleteNice to spend time with the grandies. Mine have just gone back to school after having 6 weeks off. Love how the angel looks The frame is just perfect. The pincushion is so cute, love it. The new cushions look lovely too.
ReplyDeleteWell I do love how you have framed your Angel - she looks very much at home. But, your cushions are stunning! Lots of lovely different elements to look at in the Euro one and gorgeous fabrics in the round one. They do look lovely on your bed. Happy holiday time with your young men. HeHe! I 'suppose' l'll forgive you, but, never mind, l've got
ReplyDeletethree folders full of the three furry ones, so l can make a
pot of tea, and enjoy a browse through them...must have

plenty of fun, and plenty to eat by the look of things....!

special, quite unique with it's folds, yes, l do like that.

new frame....And, her smile has widened a bit to....! :O).

Beautiful finishes. Your pin cushion is very cute. You did well using that blackboard and making a wonderful framed hanger
ReplyDeleteThe angel looks wonderful in her frame - she really stands out now. Your patchwork cushions look so beautiful too and I particularly like the slow stitched one. Alec and Sid had great fun being with you during the holidays. The pin cushion is a great idea too - beautiful and useful (following William Morris' guidelines!)
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend too.
Best wishes
Ellie
Oh my, I forgot to mention Blackie on my post! NZ Tuxie! That lake looks gorgeous, but I would shiver to death if it was cold water. Good thing children just don't notice. You have the hot heat so best to stay in the shade and craft. I have the January thaw this week. It started with sunshine Sun, Mon and Tues and then over freezing for the past 3 days. Snow is still on the ground. We were to get 1 inch of rain today but Mother nature has it her way instead and it is 150 miles south of us. Back to way below freezing tonight. I did crochet a small doily using a pattern to make a yarn place mat. Now I am crocheting a doll and her clothes. Slow going as I just get so sick of being cooped up. I did walk 3 days this past week. All the embroidery and extras on the one pillow are just lovely. Hubby here would have a fit if he had to take pretty pillows off the bed every night and no way would he put them back in the morn, lol. Turn up the fan and stay in the shade. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to spend time with the grandboys. Sounds as if you had a wonderful time with both. Your angel looks so much happier framed, sets her off to perfection. Love the pillows as well.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I've got an earworm of Raspberry Beret in my head now!! Great result on the frame for your pretty angel. Think it's the end of an era with my granddaughters as far as beach trips and picnics are concerned! They've got far better things to do now that they're older but we had great fun making those memories while we could. My bestie in Whangaparoa has her daughter and three granddaughters moved in with her during the holidays because the daughter has rented her home out on AirBnB!
ReplyDeleteIt's blooming a profusion of sweet peas here, too. The fragrance is amazing. How fun to spend such precious times with both your grandsons, Julie. I can just imagine how fabulous swimming in Lake Taupo was. The scenery there is gorgeous. Little angel is framed beautifully now, and the cushion you fashioned from all those sweet pretties is lovely. I must say you have a smattering of pretty cushions gathered upon your bed. So lovely. That's a sweet wee pincushion. Love it! Enjoy that hot weather of yours. I'm loving summer here. =)
ReplyDeleteI love the finished look for your adorable angel. I have always loved the French General fabric. I had a jelly roll of it but gave it away as a Christmas present a few years ago and have regretted it ever since! I did get another jelly roll of a similar set of fabrics. I love the pillow you made with your friends x stitch, it's really cute. I've enjoyed my visit to your blog. I think we have similar interests.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Leslie. I love French General fabrics also ... they are just so timeless. Have a wonderful week Leslie. xx
DeleteYour angel looks much happier in her frame, your day at the lake looks wonderful, what a lovely place - snorkelling! I am guessing the water is very clean and clear - what a great thing for a young, adventurous lad to be doing!
ReplyDeleteI am just catching up on your recent posts Julie - you have been busy creating up a storm as usual. I am in awe of everything that you achieve. It is cold here in USA - very wintery & lots of snow. I would send you some cooler temps if I could. Sarah USA xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sarah. I wish I could send you some warm temps as its very hot & dry here. I hope it warms up soon for you. xx
DeleteSchool is back over here, not that I have to worry about that anymore hehe. The boys look like they are having a lot of fun. Your angel looks lovely Julie, and your bed looks beautiful with your new additions. Love your ladybird pin cushion as well. It's a stinker here today it was 32 yesterday, 38 today 39 tomorrow and 36 on Tuesday before a cool change, think I'm going to die, stay cool Julie.
