Sewing & Gardening Snippets

Greetings lovely friends & readers

All the Spring feels this week, from this sweet bunch of flowers sitting in Mum's crystal vase on my bench  💛

Jane purchased these cushions from me a few years ago now & just loved them.  They were looking tatty so she removed the buttons, opened them up & removed the stuffing, then soaked & washed them.  She asked me to refill them with new wadding, some covered buttons were missing & I also replaced 5 panels which were threadbare.   Jane was delighted to have them back again & they turned out great.

My youngest son returned my hair straighteners after "borrowing them" for over a year.  He gifted me these silicone hot-mats which are made especially to sit straighteners on.  As everything kept falling down the back of my wardrobe I decided to make a simple pouch to store everything in & chose fabrics to match the silicone mats.

I just sewed together 4 inch squares, quilted them & then made a lined bag to fit everything.  Although I wasn't going to have a closure I decided to add a button tab to stop it all spilling out.

It is proving to be so handy to hold everything together & I am no longer crawling around on the wardrobe floor, trying to find it all.
There has been some other sewing completed but as it is being gifted I cannot share it yet as the recipient reads this blog  😉

The Garden is waking up after the winter & there is colour everywhere.  The magnolia is in full bloom & my Azalea is looking the prettiest it has ever looked.  September is a busy time for me in the garden as there is much to do.  When it all feels overwhelming (as it frequently does) I just remind myself of how it looked this time last year when THIS disaster was all going on! 😯

This variety of Tulip that is just coming in to bloom is called Parrot Tulip.  I have a packet each, of pink & white in Mum's old concrete Urn.

Remember how I mentioned in * this post * about growing giant Sunflowers up the side of my Hothouse?   I've started some seedlings & they are doing well. I am currently moving them outside each day to harden them off before planting.

For those that don't know, Worm Tea is a wonderful liquid plant food.

I cleaned out my Worm Farm & filled 12 bottles with fresh Worm Tea. I could easily have filled more but I ran out of bottles & need to acquire some more.

The raised veggie bed that I planted in autumn is doing well with a variety of Brassicas.  I dug over & fed the 2nd bed & planted strawberries, beetroot, & 2 varieties of lettuce.  I'll plant more when it gets a bit warmer.

I bought some tomato plants & put in the no-dig bed that I had ready in my Hothouse.  This year I remembered to use plastic cages as last year, they flopped everywhere.

I purchased cucumber & chilli plants but will keep these pots in the Hothouse for another month 'til it's warmer.

The Aloe Vera plant that I grew from a leaf from my daughter-in-law, was looking yellow & rootbound so I took it out of the pot & split it up.  I got 2 good sized plants for myself & then 6 small size ones, two I have already given away & I'll find recipients for the other 4.

I have 3 large potted topiary Buxus that were looking orange & neglected after the winter months.  I gave them all a good prune, the smaller one got removed, its roots trimmed & then planted in fresh potting mix.  I cannot do that with the bigger ones as there is a large crack in one pot & I fear it will break completely.  I gave them each a half bottle of worm tea & a good water.  I am hoping they won't die of shock after this (!!)

Sid had book character week at his school & went as "Dog Man" from the Dog Man Series of books.  His Dad made his 3D mask & his Mum made the hat & decorated his shirt.  I thought he looked wonderful 💙

I am not sure how this happened last night & I can assure you I had not sedated the Ginger Girl Cat (!!) but they got rather close on the fireside mat.  If you look closely at Pippi's face you will see she is not entirely happy about this but Little One was hardly breathing in case she hissed at him.  I can verify that No Hissing took place (maybe I hissed just a teeny bit at The Mr) 😉

Thank you dear friends, for your ever-welcome visits here today,

Wishing you a wonderful rest-of-the-week,

With much love & friendship to you all,

  2. What a lovely post, filled with gorgeous plants and wonderful makes. You have, as always, been really busy and very productive. The magnolia looks so lovely. Sid's costume is great - creativity certainly runs through the family! All that and a photo of Little One (albeit with a tense Miss Pip) - what a surprise! I hope this may mean that she is getting a bit more tolerant of him? (Fingers crossed).
Have a lovely rest of the week.
    Best wishes
    Ellie

  3. HaHa! Everything looking lovely Julie...As usual....
Especially the flowers, plants etc...and all growing
    where they belong...in the ground...!
Autumn has arrived early this year, over here, though
my Virginia Creeper is still looking good, still in full
leave, though not for much longer l suspect...! :(
And rain has made an appearance all this week,
    though brighter tomorrow...! :(

Hair straighteners take me back, growing up, mia
Mama, and then me, used them to try and straighten
my curly afro, without any success....so l have just put
up with it being curly....! :).

And Sid looks great dressed as "Dog Man" have'nt heard
of that character...? Dad did a very good job of his head...!
    Looks good....1 :).

Ah! And nice to see the furry two, coming together slowly,
    slowly..HaHa! Bless!xx

Best get gone, got a busy weekend coming up, Burfday and
all that, had my first card yesterday, from my daughter, as she's
flown off 6.40 yesterday morning, to my homeland...Sicily...for
a little brake...! They've got lots planned, they will have a great
time! I'm stuck back here in the rain...! :(

  4. Loving your spring flowers Julie - my azalea's are about to flower, and we have a frost forecast for Saturday night (-1o). As I am going away for the weekend, I will have to devise a covering that can stay on all weekend...
I had to smile about your younger son 'borrowing' your hair straightener - my DD 'borrowed' my nutri bullet about 8 years ago, and now I am in the house with them, so gave my newer one away, and will use the older one when I need to.
The bag you made for the straightener is brilliant, and those mats look a great idea
I too have a worm farm - and we call it 'worm juice' - it's great, and I use it and also gift some, which ensures a regular supply of bottles :)
Sid's costume is fantastic - I think I would have recognised it without you naming it, as my DGS loves dog man and has all the books!
The purry furry's here are still not on talking terms... but we keep them in their own part(s) of the house, and outdoors they just have to sort themselves out... my boy tends to go over the high back fence where the youngsters do not follow (yet).
    Blessings
    Maxine

  5. I had to look back at last year's post to remind myself of the upheaval you went through, unnecessarily, as it turned out. Bad things happen so that good things are even better!
Lovely to see Little One and Ginger Girl accommodating each other.
Sid looked wonderful - book character days are such fun.

  6. Envy your Spring awakening Julie! Signs of Autumn here and deffo temps dropping at night, coupled with early darkness! Something tells me I'm going to hate the coming winter months!

  7. Julie, I remember your yard mess and dig up, but it seems longer ago. How absolutely wonderful to see your Spring flowering and veggie photos. The great things for me is to see the other 1/2 of the world thru your eyes when the seasons change. Our color now is yellow and brown. Having a end of summer drought like last year and there will be no colorful Autumn leaf color. Our yard is crispy brown and covered in early drop leaves. I like your new pouch for the hair equip. I am so glad I have straight hair in no humidity but frizz in high humidity so I use no tools on the hair do, lol. Dog Man was epic. How clever of Sid and his Dad and Mum. Give all 3 fluff balls a kiss from me. Done feeding the pillars and now down to about 20 chrysalis left to hatch or not. Lynn and Precious XX

  9. As you enter spring we are entering Autumn and slowly trying to get items collected from the garden, and bringing in plants from outside to over winter in the house.

    God bless.

  10. What a neat solution for the hair straightener and mats, pretty too. My magnolia's have just about finished but my Azalea is bursting with colour! Your vege's look so good, they'd probably be wilting by now if they lived here! Sid's outfit is awesome! The 3D effect is fabulous. Nice save of the circular vintage sheet cushions. Maybe, just maybe those cats will become friends after all?

  11. You have been super busy and productive Julie. Wonderful idea for your hair straightener and mats! Lovely to see the spring flowering trees and so good the cats are getting a teeny bit closer. Good save on the cushions. Great book character for Sid

  12. Cool cushions Julie, and your garden looks lovely, I much prefer your magnolia to the ones we have with the white flowers.
Sid does look awesome in his costume. Now I have to admit my mouth dropped open when I saw the last pic, well I never, who would of thought, and nearly on the same rug hehehe!

  13. Love the costume for Sid, his dad's clever. You make so much in so little time! Nice to see your cats on the same mat. Have you watched the Cat Daddy videos on YouTube? Jackson Galaxy - he was helpful for us in taming Mollie, he often encounters families where cats don't get on well and finds solutions but it's also very entertaining just watching his programs. Your hot house looks well organised. Betty
