Arts And Crafts

Greetings lovely friends & readers

Whenever I ask Sid what he would like to do today he always replies "Arts & Crafts".  I save a myriad of boxes, tubes & other containers that I think he might enjoy creating with.

The other day he made a "marble run" ... a contraption made of tubes etc for his marbles to go down - even including a sharks mouth for the marble to run through. I am always amazed at his imagination & he never needs any prompting.

Every Tuesday after school we go to Lego Club which is held in a part of our local Library.  Afterwards we go into the Library & he chooses books to get out.  The Christmas craft book above left caught his eye as he wanted to make the Snow Globe Terrarium in it.  Off to the Op-shop we go to buy a large glass jar for $2.  Thankfully Granny had everything else required to make it.

Sid wanted to "re-enact" the scene shown in the book so I found my other bottle brush trees & we did a matching display.  The snow globe has fairy lights in it but ours aren't showing up well in my photo.  We had to thread white pompoms onto clear fishing twine to make the effect of the snow falling.  Sid was delighted when Granny found a remnant of green ric-rac for his lid. πŸ˜‰

Also in the book were these Christmas Pinecone Owls.  Luckily I had some pinecones in my woodshed so we made one of these as well but chose not to spray paint our pinecone.

I've covered Connor's face as I don't have his Mums permission to put his photo on the internet

Sid had been asking for a friend to come so we invited Connor, a boy from his class & such a sweet delightful boy.  Together they made a range of characters using cardboard loo roll tubes.  I googled & found * this * wonderful site for ideas.
When I collected Sid from school this past week Connor came up to me in the playground & said "Granny - I've been saving my toilet roll tubes for the next time I come to your house".  What a perfect compliment πŸ’™

My lovely friend Kiwikid Sue & her husband have been on a trip over to New Zealand & we arranged to meet up in Tirau for lunch.  I had wanted to give Sue a wee gift for her new (6 month old!!!) Grandson Finn - just a little handmade Kiwiana gift, so I sewed some bibs & a matching teething ring, then made a cat from a wool blanket in my stash.
I pulled apart an old toy of Sid's & removed the rattle from inside it - then I stuffed the cat with the rattle inside & it sounded great.

My friend Carolyn has been up for 2 weeks dog-sitting for her son while he was overseas.  Carolyn wanted a chalk painting & decoupage lesson so we organised a painting day together last Saturday.  She painted the thrifted tray & bowl above & then I showed her how to decoupage them using paper serviettes.  She plans to gift these two items filled with baking.

I had been working on this old saw that had belonged to my Dad - I bought it home in March when I emptied out the family home.  The Saw was rusty so I sanded this off & then coated it with Fishoilene which I found in The Mr's shed.
Unfortunately the Fishoilene was still sticky after 5 days of sitting the saw by the fire.  I googled "fishoilene still tacky" & it suggested sprinkling talcum powder over it to remove the stickiness.  I figured I had nothing to lose so I sprinkled it liberally with talc & then shook the rest off onto the grass.  This certainly did the trick & took away any sticky residue.  While Carolyn was painting her woodware I painted Dad's Saw - 2 coats of black chalkpaint.

I wanted to gift the Saw to my Brother for his birthday - he is right into growing veggies but although I looked hard I could find no transfers or serviettes relating to this theme.  In the end I used offcuts of the Botanical transfer that I used on * this box * & was really pleased with the end result.

I have sprayed the saw with two coats of clear matt finish varnish as I think this will protect it well.  I especially love the detail on the wooden handle & will give this a couple of coats of wax before I gift it to him next month.

Little One is fine & dandy & living his life to the fullest ......

He enjoys watching the birds out the dining room window as they eat the bread I toss to them.  We leave the door open for him to venture outside but he is still a little timid as yet & has only gone a handful of steps out.  Mind you, if you could see the face on the Ginger girl who guards the door, hissing, spitting & banging on the glass, you would think twice about venturing out too (!!!)

Little One is fixated with the front-loading washing machine & spends a great deal of time watching it agitate round & round.  He is also absolutely obsessed with the toilet ... the above funny appeared in my inbox this morning from The Mr. 😐
A funny thing I've noticed that he does ... when I use my grumpy voice to him, shake my finger & say No - he squints his blind eye at me several times as if to say "Well I am incapacitated you know!"

Dear Pippi & Blackie have not become friends with him as yet.  I live in hope but I think that the website I read that stated "it can often take 8 to 12 months" was probably referring to Our Household!  He has been in the household for 9 1/2 weeks now & for those that were wondering - Yes I am counting!!
The photo of Blackie is especially for you Willie my friend ... notice no leg-in-the-air today πŸ˜‰

Alec picked these few straggly daffodills yesterday when I had him here - we had really strong winds on Friday & these were almost flattened.  They make me feel that hopefully, spring is around the corner.

Thank you, as always, for your ever-welcome visits here today dear friends,

Wishing you all a Happy Sunday (I started this blog post 3 days ago now!!)

With much love & friendship to you all,

Julie & the furry ones x0x0x0

  3. How good that Granny has a great variety of resources! Lovely to see all that creativity. Nice that you and Sue were able to catch up. That's a lovely gift you made for Finn. The saw came up well - and what a beautiful handle it has. Cute photos of the furry ones!

  4. Sid seems to enjoy his crafting etc...well..he's surrounded by
his Nan's talented creations, so it must rub off on him, and
for a boy, that's a bit special, l was raised very close to mia
Mama..and Sicilian boys are raised the same as the girls,
so learned to cook, sew, knit, crochet, do hair etc..etc...
And in turn, taught my daughter much the same...so now,
a grown up lady, she has progressed in her arts and crafts...!

And...I 'SAW' what a wonderful job you've done on Dad's saw
Julie...Amazing...It would look nice hanging at an angle above
    a doorway....! Quite unique...!

It's certainly strange about cats and washing machines, l had a
cat once, who used to watch snooker, every time a ball was potted
she'd go round the back of the TV, to find it...HeHe! Bless!x
Another cat l had used to have loved chasing a ball up and down
the hallway, or up and down the stairs...he used to pick the ball up,
bring back to me to throw again...Only for 3~4 times, then he'd flake
out, and want to rest...you know what cats are like...! :).
Oh! And one cat l had, used to love watching the loo..WC..being
flushed, put his front paws up on the loo rim, and watch the water
    going round and round...HeHe! :O).

    Ah! And there's Blackie..the bunny killer..HeHe! Bless him, he's
    lovely...
Looks as if the two of them are taking time out...And pleased
about Little One blending in...and...yes..give it time, they'll all
    come together...! :O)

Must get on, busy Sunday, off to visit a sick friend shortly, her
carer likes me to visit, every couple weeks, as l cheer her up
and make her laugh, she's not that well, an old friend l used to
go to school with...so we go back a long way..!

Great post Julie..As always, now l've finished writing my comment
l sent your post off to my daughter...she likes to see and read it...!
She's an expert crafter her self, and enjoys seeing your work to...! :).

  5. Where to begin? I love Sid's snow globe - he's a boy who will never be bored with his busy imagination and fingers.
Thank you for the link to the toilet roll ideas - I sent it to my youngest daughter and my granddaughter for their little ones.
I love the bibs and rattle and the little grandson's mother will be delighted with such gorgeous gifts.
The details on the saw handle are wonderful and you've matched them perfectly. It's a lovely idea and a great way to honour your father.
    . . . and then there's Little One . . . what a character!
I hope spring comes quickly for you with all that that entails - such a lovely time of year. x x x

  6. You certainly have a creative young man in Sid, Julie - what a fabulous creation he made for his marbles, and also the Christmas creations are wonderful.
We have a new kitten in the house, he's been here about 3 months, (now 5 months old) and my cat of 6.5 years, and at this point they are still fighting, although the younger one is realising that my boy is still boss - and I mean physically fighting and rolling around the floor!!
Yes, cats think they rule the roost, and insist on their own way - or try to!
Loving your flowers - my bulbs are sprouting, and even the hippeastrum are showing signs of growth. I have an outside Christmas Cactus that is flowering also, and my indoor orchids are also budding, so there is hope that the seasons are starting to change
    Blessings

  7. How fun for Sid with his imagination. And a friend to help, to boot. My mom used paper tubes and white paper and aluminum foil for me to make castles when I was little. Then I'd add bits of wood scrapes like blocks. Now I have no imagination and do not crafting in a few months, lol. You certainly have been busy and your brother will enjoy your father's saw in it's new state. Fun for you to have friends dropping in and make winter pass quicker. You have daffs blooming and I finally have gladiolus. 3 of the open stems of dark red broke off in a horrible wind the other night and now are on the kitchen counter instead of outside for the hummingbirds. Glad to see all 3 kitties and am hoping some day they will settle into a more relaxed life together. Lynn and Precious XX

  8. Ellie Foster has left a new comment on your post "Arts And Crafts":

Sid certainly takes after you with his creativity. It's a great thing and will be so useful (and important) to him throughout his life.
I loved the cat quote - cats in our family have always done this with me and if they couldn't come in, would wait outside the door and escort me back! Little One has certainly settled in and looks very happy. The others will eventually come round although they may only tolerate each other. As long as they have their own spaces, all will be well. Keep telling yourself that!
    Best wishes
    Ellie

  9. My Goodness Julie, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree does it?? All wonderful creations and so nice that Sid's friend felt so comfortable as well - watch out you might end up with the whole class at your place for 'arts & crafts'. you really are a very talented lady.

    1. Thank you so much. I laughed about the whole class ending up here for arts & crafts!!! That would be a struggle to fit them in & I am sure the 3 cats would leave home that day!!!! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š

  13. Lovely post Julie. Watch out you might become "Granny" to a lot more children before too long. Oh what fun. Love, love what Sid has created.

  14. Sid certainly is creative and imaginative, he made some lovely things - and so did you! I think the way you have decorated your dad's saw is beautiful and your brother will just love it. The decoupage looks pretty and, as you know, I like things that are both pretty and functional! :) blogger won't let me sign in so I am anonymous! Betty )Elderberry-rob.blogspot.com)

  15. What a wonderful post! It made me think of the long letters my Nana and I would write to each other after I moved away and became a mum. Full of ordinary life, and I mean that in the very best of ways, Julie. I love seeing how your grands have grown, the every-increasing feline population within your home (ha ha!), the gorgeous workmanship of your crafting, and the warmth with which you write to us all. Hope you know that you lift many a sagging heart, and put a smile on every cloudy day. Biggest hugs my lovely friend,
    Jennifer xxx

  16. It's lovely to see a young boy who loves crafting, nice one Sid, great imagination. Love your snow globe Julie, I still have two I made way back, I did mine up the other way with the lid on the bottom, just hot glued the santa and tree to some styrofoam and then glued that to the lid I put Epsom salts in the bottom to cover the styrofoam, and they are still going strong, just gotta bang the jars a little to loosen it off hehe. Great job on your painted/ decoupaged pieces ladies, I do hope the pussy cats can learn to get along. Beautiful gifts for Sue's new granson, have a great week Julie.

  18. Not so much arts and crafts going on here when I have the granddaughters during school hols. The youngest is 9 and prefers her IPad (though we did make cupcakes last week) and the eldest is 14 and can't do anything that might break one of her gel nails!!! I was looking after my 3yr old grandson on Sunday but he's such a Tasmanian Devil that there's only time to make a Duplo tower or two before it comes crashing down again!! Time goes so quickly doesn't it Julie?

  19. Well done Sid...you are awesome. Sounds like a chip off your Grannies block *wink and high praise indeed from Connor. My daughter began a Lego club at her school and the kids love it! How wonderful to have the beautiful Sue visit. Love the goodies you sent home with her. What a special gift for your brother...it looks fab!
Little one looks as if she's very happy at yours despite the cranky housemates lol!

  20. Wonderful post Julie. Sid certainly is a creative young man and so good his friend could come and join in. He has a great imagination. Thank you for the beautiful gifts for Finn, the family think they are wonderful, so happy we could catch up. I hope the cats can all eventually get on together Julie - although 12 to 18 months.....that is a lot of chocolate consumption!! I would not be venturing out either if there was an angry ginger thing outside the door!!
